Death toll rises to 17 soldiers in Egypt's Sinai blast

The death toll of the car bomb that targeted a security checkpoint on Friday in Egypt's North Sinai province has increased to 17 soldiers, while 25 others were injured, a security source told Xinhua, suggesting the toll is likely to increase.

"The blast targeted a military checkpoint of Karm al-Qawadis in Sheikh Zuweid, and it was carried out by Sinai militants," the source said, referring to Sinai-based al-Qaida-inspired Ansar Bayt al-Maqdis group that claimed responsibility for several previous attacks.

Friday's blast came a couple of days after ten people, including six policemen, were injured in a blast that targeted security men outside Cairo University in Giza.

Attacks on security men and premises have been growing since the ouster of former Islamist President Mohamed Morsi by the military in July 2013 and the massive security crackdown on his supporters, which left about 1,000 of them killed and thousands more arrested.

The attacks were based in the Sinai Peninsula and have extended later on to the capital Cairo and other provinces across the country.

Earlier on Sunday, seven soldiers were killed and four others injured in an explosion that targeted their vehicle in Arish city in North Sinai.

Official reports say that at least 500 security men were killed by similar anti-government militant attacks over the past year. Ansar Bayt al-Maqdsi and Ajnad Misr extremist groups claimed responsibility for most of the attacks.

  1. Sinai attacks kill at least 29 Egyptian soldiers ...

Three more Egyptian soldiers were killed in the Sinai Peninsula on Friday, hours after an attack on two armored vehicles that stopped at a checkpoint killed 26 soldiers, security sources said.

An earlier report said 10 soldiers were killed and several other soldiers were seriously wounded in the first attack, which took place in the border area of Karm el-Qawadees in the Sinai Peninsula.

Security sources gave conflicting accounts of what happened. Initially sources said it was a car bomb, but a security sources later told Al Arabiya that mortar shells were fired on the vehicles, one of which was loaded with ammunition.

Eyewitnesses had earlier heard a loud explosion near the Egyptian town of al-Arish in the Sinai Peninsula on Friday afternoon in what appeared to be an attack on a nearby army installation................http://english.alarabiya.net/en/News/middle-east/2014/10/24/Explosion-heard-near-army-base-in-Egypt-s-Sinai-.html

  2. Egypt imposes state of emergency in Sinai after attacks ...

Egypt has declared a three-month state of emergency in parts of the Sinai Peninsula after at least 31 soldiers were killed in two attacks there.

President Abdul Fattah al-Sisi has declared three days of mourning in the wake of the suspected jihadist attacks.

Egypt's Rafah crossing into the Gaza Strip was also closed, state TV said.

It was the biggest loss of life in decades for Egypt's army, which has been carrying out an offensive against jihadists in northern Sinai.

The area has become increasingly lawless since President Hosni Mubarak was overthrown in 2011. Militants have stepped up attacks since Islamist President Mohammed Morsi was ousted by the army last year............http://www.bbc.com/news/world-middle-east-29766945
