An old woman has died in floods caused by heavy rainfall in eastern
Serbia, the regional Serb television company Bor said on Monday. The
tragedy occurred in the village of Podvrski near the town of Kladovo
close to the border with Romania. Water has destroyed a bridge and
disrupted traffic on the Kladovo-Negotin highway.
According to Predrag Maric, a Serbian Interior Ministry official in charge of emergency situations, a state of emergency has been declared in several districts in eastern Serbia.
About 20 people have been evacuated from Podvrski village and about 200 have been evacuated from the town of Tekija. Rescuers are planning to evacuate another 300 people from risk areas in Tekija.
Evacuation is under way in other populated localities in eastern Serbia.
