Russia not to be drawn into large-scale conflicts (Putin) / Rusia recuerda su 'potencia nuclear' y advierte a sus socios que es mejor 'no meterse' con ellos

MOSCOW, August 29. /ITAR-TASS/. Russia will not be drawn into large-scale conflicts but partners need to understand that it is better not to mess around with Russia, President Vladimir Putin said on Friday.
“I want to say immediately that Russia is far from getting involved into any large-scale conflicts. We do not want and do not intend to do this,” Putin said at a youth forum in central Russia.

Russia to build up nuke capability for ensuring own security

At the same time, Russia will continue building up its nuclear potential not for the purpose of intimidation but for ensuring its security, Putin said.

“I want to remind you that Russia is one of the most powerful nuclear nations. This is a reality, not just words,” Putin said.

“We are strengthening our nuclear deterrence forces and our armed forces. They are getting more compact and more efficient at the same time. They are getting more modernized in terms of their supply with the latest armaments. We continue building up this potential and we’ll be doing this in the future,” the Russian president said.
  • Russia is taking these efforts not “to threaten anyone but to feel secure and calm and have the possibilities to implement those plans, which we have for the development of the economy and the social sphere,” Putin said.
  • “We must always be ready to repel any aggression against Russia and our partners should always be aware that no matter in which condition their governments may be or which foreign policy concepts they may pursue, it is better not to come against Russia as regards a possible armed conflict,” Putin warned.
At present, “it has not come into anyone’s mind to unleash any large-scale conflict with Russia,” Putin said.

  1. European Union foreign ministers have expressed "deep concern" at Russia's "aggression against Ukraine", as the bloc's leaders prepare to consider new sanctions on the Moscow government....

Speaking after the ministerial meeting in Milan, EU foreign policy chief Catherine Aston urged Russia to "withdraw its forces from Ukraine".

EU leaders are to meet in Brussels to consider their response to the crisis.

Russia denies that its forces are backing rebels in eastern Ukraine.

But Ms Ashton said there was "deep concern" over "direct aggression by Russian forces". She called on Russia to stop the flow of arms, equipment and personnel into Ukraine.

In Brussels European Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso warned Russia that the EU was ready to "stand by its principles" and called for a political solution before the crisis reached a "point of no return".

He was speaking after talks with Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko, who is due to attend the EU leaders' summit later on Saturday. ...................http://www.bbc.com/news/world-europe-28993873

  2. EU summit to appoint senior positions and discuss Ukraine...

Taoiseach Enda Kenny is in Brussels today for an EU leaders summit where it is widely expected that the Polish Prime Minister, Donald Tusk, will be appointed President of the European Council - replacing Herman Van Rompuy.

The President is the person who chairs EU leaders summits and is tasked will securing compromise among the 28 Member States.

It is also predicted that Italy's foreign minister, Federica Mogherini, will take over from Catherine Ashton as the EU's foreign policy chief.

Last month, EU leaders failed to agree on candidates for two top EU jobs.

It is now expected that the current Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk will take over from Herman Van Rompuy as Council President - reflecting a strong desire by eastern countries to finally hold a senior position in the Union.

Mr Tusk is a centre-right politician and so it is expected that the Italy's centre-left Foreign Minister will take over from Britain's Cathy Ashton as High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy.

The political horse-trading and consequent delay in appointments has been something of an embarrassment for the EU, at a time of major international upheaval in Iraq and Syria, Gaza and Israel as well as Eastern Ukraine.

    Further measures against Russia

The summit is considering whether to impose new economic measures against Moscow over the involvement of Russian forces in eastern Ukraine.

This follows NATOs declaration yesterday that his forces were engaged in direct military operations in eastern Ukraine.

However, Finnish Prime Minister Alexander Stubb said European Union leaders would not decide on new sanctions today......................http://www.rte.ie/news/2014/0830/640290-eu-summit/
