US Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel on Friday discussed with his Russian counterpart Sergey Shoygu about the ongoing situation in Ukraine over the phone, a Pentagon spokesman said.
While discussing the Ukraine situation, Hagel, specifically, requested clarification regarding a Russian humanitarian convoy transporting humanitarian relief supplies to eastern Ukraine, said Press Secretary Navy Rear Adm. John Kirby.
"Shoygu guaranteed that there were no Russian military personnel involved in the humanitarian convoy, nor was the convoy to be used as a pretext to further intervene in Ukraine," Kirby said.
Shoygu acknowledged that the goods would be delivered and distributed under the International Committee of the Red Cross, Kirby said.
In addition, the two defense ministers discussed the need to have bilateral meetings on the Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces Treaty and agreed to maintain open lines of communication, Kirby said.
