Rebel site suggests insurgents shot down Malaysia plane by mistake

KIEV: A social media site attributed to a top Ukrainian rebel commander said the insurgents had shot down an army transporter at the location where a Malaysia Airlines plane crashed on Thursday near the Russian border.
The comments by the top military commander of the self-proclaimed "Donetsk People's Republic" suggest the separatists had shot down the Malaysia Airlines plane by mistake, believing it was a large Ukrainian army transport plane.
"We just downed an An-26*** near Torez. It is down near the Progress mine," said the VK page attributed to Igor Strelkov, which is frequently quoted by Ukrainian media.
The rebels shot down another An-26 in rebel-held eastern Ukraine on June 14, killing 49 government servicemen.

"We had warned (the Ukrainian armed forces) not to fly in 'our sky'," Strelkov says in the post.

"And here is a video confirming that a 'bird fell'," said the post.
  • The website then provides a link that is identical to that published by Ukrainian media in reports about the Malaysia Airlines jet.
The video shows locals referring to the Progress coal mine mentioned by Strelkov.

  1. DNR leaders ready to allow int’l specialists to investigate plane crash...

The leaders of the self-proclaimed Donetsk People’s Republic (DNR) said they were ready to allow international specialists to investigate the crash of the Malaysia Airlines Boeing-777 passenger plane in Ukraine, DNR parliament speaker Denis Pushilin told ITAR-TASS.

“We are ready to let an international commission in for a more thorough and faster investigation of the tragedy,” he said.

The DNR prime minister’s spokesperson Sergei Kavtaradze said “militias have no weapons that could have shot down a plane at an altitude of 10,000 metres. We have man-portable air defense systems which can shoot down at altitudes no more than 3-4 kilometres”............http://en.itar-tass.com/world/741225

We are horrified by the crash of Malaysia Airlines flight MH17. There are no words adequate to express our condolences to the families of the nearly 300 victims. We offer our sympathies and support to the Governments of Malaysia and the Netherlands at this difficult time, as well as to all those whose citizens may have been on board. We are reviewing whether any American citizens were aboard the flight. The United States Government remains prepared to assist with a credible, international investigation any way we can, and we will continue to be in touch with all relevant partners as we seek the facts of what happened today.

  8. Crashed Malaysian flight not into restricted airspace: IATA ....

The International Air Transport Association (IATA) said on Thursday that it was believed that the crashed Malaysia Airlines flight has not traversed to restricted airspace.

IATA said in a brief statement that based on the information currently available it was believed that the airspace that the aircraft was traversing was not subject to restrictions.

A Malaysia Airlines flight MH17 crashed Thursday in eastern Ukraine near the Russian border, with all the 280 passengers and 15 crew members on board reportedly having been killed.

It was reported that the Malaysia Airlines Boeing 777, which was flying from Amsterdam to Kuala Lumpur, started descending 50 km before entering Russian airspace, and was subsequently found burning on the ground on Ukrainian territory.

The plane reportedly disappeared from radar at an altitude of 10,000 meters and then crashed near the city of Shakhtarsk in Ukraine's Donetsk region.

  9. Malaysia Airlines Boeing 777-200 flying from Amsterdam to Kuala Lumpur was allegedly shot down by a group of Russian-backed Cossack militants near the village of Chornukhine, Luhansk Oblast, some 80 kilometers north-west of Donetsk, according to recordings of intercepted phone calls between Russian military intelligence officers and members of terrorist groups, released by the country’s security agency (SBU).....

One phone call apparently was made at 4:40 p.m. Kyiv time, or 20 minutes after the plane crash, by Igor Bezler, who the SBU says is a Russian military intelligence officer and leading commander of the self-proclaimed Donetsk People’s Republic.

He reports to a person identified by Ukraine’s SBU as a colonel in the main intelligence department of the general headquarters of the armed forces of the Russian Federation Vasili Geranin regarding the shot down plane, which is about to be examined by the militants.

The second intercepted conversation released by the Security Service of Ukraine was apparently between militants nicknamed “Major” and “Greek” immediately upon inspection of the crash site. “It’s 100 percent a passenger (civilian) aircraft,” Major is recorded as saying, as he admitted to seeing no weapons on site. “Absolutely nothing. Civilian items, medicinal stuff, towels, toilet paper.”
