East Ukraine militias shoot down two jets of Ukrainian Air Force

DONETSK, July 23. /ITAR-TASS/. The militiamen of the self-proclaimed Donets People’s Republic (DPR) have shot down two strike fighters of the Ukrainian Air Force.
The Novorossiya agency reported on Wednesday that “the parachute of one of the pilots was found; he managed to hide in the forest”.
“Two Ukrainian military planes were shot down from MANPAD after the DPR militia positions near Saur-Mohila east from Donetsk were attacked,” the message says. “One plane was shot down near the point 185, the other near Dmitrovka. Both planes were downed with a MANPAD***. One of the pilots landed in the dense foliage, the parachute was found, the pilot — not yet,” the agency quotes an eyewitness militiaman.

The spokesperson for the military operation Alexei Dmitrashkovsky confirmed that two planes of the Ukrainian Air Force have been shot down Wednesday.
  • According to available information, the Ukrainian army had 17 jet fighters, 35 attack planes and 33 bombers at the beginning of the armed operation in the east of the country.
Over the past month, militias have destroyed at least three Ukrainian Air Forces planes. In particular, July 1, a Su-25 was downed near Snezhny, and a Su-24 bomber near Luhansk.
June 14, a Su-25 that previously attacked the DPR militia staff in the building of Horlivka’s interior department, was shot down. June 3, the militiamen also reported about the elimination of a Su-25 assaulter near Semyonovka.

  1. Pro-Russia rebels have shot down two Ukrainian fighter jets in eastern Ukraine just days after the downing of Malaysia Airlines flight MH17, a Ukrainian military spokesman has said.....

"Two Sukhoi Ukrainian fighter jets have been shot down. The fate of the pilots is not known," a spokesman, Oleksiy Dmytrashkivsky, said, adding that the planes had been brought down about 16 miles (25km) from the crash site of MH17.

But a second military spokesman said the jets had been downed at a different location by rockets fired by insurgents. The two pilots managed to parachute out, he said, giving no further details about their condition.

"Today in the south of the Lugansk region close to the village of Dmytrivka, pro-Russia fighters shot two Su-25 jets from a missile system," the spokesman Vladislav Seleznev said.

"The pilots took evasive action … but the planes were hit," he said.

A spokesman for the self-proclaimed Donetsk People's Republic told AFP its fighters had shot down the two aircraft. An AFP crew trying to reach the scene was turned back by rebels who fired shots near their car about six miles from Dmytrivka.

The downing of the government jets comes just six days after the insurgents were accused of shooting down the Malaysian passenger plane using a surface-to-air missile, killing all 298 people on board....................http://www.theguardian.com/world/2014/jul/23/rebels-ukrainian-fighter-jets-mh17
