UN chief encouraged by Ukrainian president-elect's commitment to de-escalation

UN Secretary-General Ban Ki- moon on Wednesday said he was encouraged by Ukrainian president- elect Petro Poroshenko's commitment to de-escalation and dialogue after a phone conversation with the latter.

In the phone conversation, the UN chief said Poroshenko's commitment to de-escalation and dialogue "will be critical within Ukraine, as well as with its neighbors."

  • Ban also congratulated Poroshenko on having received a strong mandate from the people, "who expect him to move quickly to steer the country away from political, economic and social instability and toward security, greater prosperity and genuine democratic governance."

Ukrainian businessman and presidential candidate Petro Poroshenko won Sunday's election with 53.72 percent of the vote, followed by ex-prime minister Yulia Tymoshenko with 13.09 percent and Oleh Lyashko, 8.47 percent, according to the country's Central Electoral Commission.

  • Poroshenko had vowed to end the tensions in eastern Ukraine, where protesters demand independence from Kiev and closer ties with Moscow, to initiate early parliamentary elections by the end of this year and to intensify efforts to harmonize the country's relationship with Russia.
