Red Cross says workers detained in east Ukraine freed

DONETSK, Ukraine: 
Several Red Cross members detained by rebels in the eastern Ukrainian city of Donetsk have been released, an official from the organisation in Kiev told AFP on Saturday.

"An emergency response team from the local Red Cross and one member of the International Red Cross were detained. They are now all free," said the official, who did not wish to be named.


The international staff member is Swiss, the official added.

Several members of the Red Cross were held for seven hours by rebel activists in the eastern Ukrainian city of Donetsk and released early on Saturday, one having been beaten, a Red Cross official in Kiev said.

A spokesman for the self-styled pro-Russian "Donetsk People's Republic" said on Saturday they had been detained on Friday evening by rebel activists on suspicion of espionage.

The Red Cross official gave no further details, though the internet newspaper Novosti Donbassa said a Frenchman had been among those held. there was no confirmation of this. "They were released at two o'clock. One had beeen heavily beaten," Red Cross official Irina Tsaryuk told Reuters.

  1. The Donetsk People's Republic (DPR) knows nothing about the detention of International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) representatives in Donetsk on Friday, DPR government cochairman Myroslav Rudenko told Interfax on Saturday....

    "I learned about that case from journalists. I do not know if it has actually happened or not," Rudenko said.
