Lugansk People's Republic not to have Ukrainian presidential election on May 25

There will be no Ukrainian presidential election in the Lugansk People's Republic on May 25 due to the new status of the region, Army of the Southeast spokesman Vasily Nikitin told a press conference in Lugansk on Monday.

"The election might have taken place in the Lugansk region. But we have become the Lugansk People's Republic. So, the election will not be held," he said.

The Lugansk Region Council lost its legitimacy at the moment of the proclamation of the republic, Nikitin said. In his words, the authorities of the new republic are drawing up a request for recognition, which will be filed with the United Nations.

He also said Lugansk would have a gala concert on Monday night. A referendum on the self-determination of the Lugansk region was held on May 11. Some 96 percent of the vote supported federalization of the Lugansk region, Interfax reports.
