Ukraine's Acting President: Military on Full Combat Alert Against Possible Russian Invasion

Ukraine's acting president says its military is "on full combat alert" against a possible invasion by Russian troops massed on the border.

Acting President Oleksandr Turchynov said in a ministerial meeting in Kyiv on Wednesday there is a real threat of Russia starting a war against Ukraine's mainland.

The announcement comes as pro-Russian gunmen seized yet another administrative building in eastern Ukraine. Armed insurgents took control of the city council building in Horlivka early Wednesday, a city of more than 260,000 people. Police say the pro-Russian rebels have also overtaken the regional police department in Horlivka.

Hundreds of pro-Russian separatists overran more Ukrainian government buildings near the Russian border earlier this week, seizing a prosecutor's office in Luhansk and taking control of the provincial capital Donetsk. The pro-Moscow rebels in Donetsk have set a referendum on secession for May 11. A similar vote last month led to Russia's annexation of the Crimean peninsula........[voanews.com]

  1. Ukraine separatists seize second provincial capital, fire on police......

(Reuters) - Hundreds of pro-Moscow separatists stormed government buildings in one of Ukraine's provincial capitals on Tuesday and fired on police holed up in a regional headquarters, a major escalation of their revolt despite new Western sanctions on Russia.

New U.S. and EU sanctions packages, announced with fanfare, were seen as so mild that Russian share prices rose in relief. A small number of names were added to existing blacklists, while threats to take more serious measures were put on hold.

Nevertheless, Russian President Vladimir Putin responded by threatening to reconsider Western participation in energy deals in Russia, the world's biggest oil producer, where most major U.S. and European oil companies have extensive projects..............http://www.reuters.com/article/2014/04/30/us-ukraine-crisis-idUSBREA3S0F720140430?feedType=RSS&feedName=worldNews

Ukrainian Armed Forces are put in full combat readiness. According to parliament-appointed interim President and Verkhovna Rada Speaker Oleksandr Turchynov, it is linked to a threat from Russia.

At a meeting with chairs of regional state administrations, Turchynov admitted that Kiev authorities did not control the situation in Donetsk and Luhansk regions.

“The authorities do not control the situation in Donetsk and on the region’s territory. I want to say frankly that law enforcement agencies are not able to take control over the situation in Donetsk and Luhansk regions,” he stated.

  4. Kiew versetzt Truppen in volle Alarmbereitschaft...
