EU imposes sanctions on 15 Russian officials, Ukrainians. - Chief of the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Russia Valery Vasilevich Gerasimov was also targeted

The European Union (EU) said on Tuesday that it had imposed travel bans and assets freeze on 15 Russian officials and Ukrainians.

The new list included Russian Deputy Prime Minister Dmitry Nikolayevich Kozak, Minister for Crimean Affairs Oleg Genrikhovich Savelyev and Deputy Chairman of State Duma Ludmila Ivanovna Shvetsova.

  • Chief of the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Russia Valery Vasilevich Gerasimov was also targeted.

The latest move brought the total number of Russian officials that came under EU sanctions to 48, after the Ukraine crisis put Russia and the West in the worst confrontation since the Cold War.

  • Imposition of EU sanctions on Russia shows Brussels’ full misinterpretation of the current situation in Ukraine, the Russian Foreign Ministry said on Tuesday.

“If someone in Brussels hopes to stabilize the situation in Ukraine this way, this is an obvious evidence of full misinterpretation of domestic political situation in that country and direct invitation to local neo-Nazis to continue their outrage and lynch civilians in south-eastern Ukraine,” the ministry said.

A new portion of sanctions against Russian and Ukrainian citizens announced by the European Union cannot but cause repulsion, the Russian Foreign Ministry said Tuesday.

"A new installment of sanctions imposed by the EU on Russian and Ukrainian citizens cannot but cause repulsion," the ministry's commentary said. "Instead of making the Kiev clique take seats at a conference table together with the southeastern regions and discuss the future structure of the country, our partners have taken lead from Washington and are making ever more unfriendly gestures towards Russia," the foreign ministry added.

  1. Pro-Russia activists seize Luhansk HQ...

A large crowd of pro-Russian separatists has stormed the regional administration's headquarters in the eastern Ukrainian city of Luhansk.

A few dozen men, some reportedly armed with metal bars, smashed windows and doors to break into the building.

Activists shouting "Referendum Russia" later flew a Russian flag over it.

Earlier, Russia criticised sanctions imposed by the US and EU on individuals and companies over their alleged actions aimed at destabilising Ukraine.

Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov said the US had "essentially lowered an 'Iron Curtain'" by targeting Russia's high-tech sector.

The EU, he added, had proved that it was "under Washington's thumb".
    'No control'

Mr Ryabkov also stressed that Russia had no intention of invading eastern Ukraine, where pro-Russia activists have seized government buildings in more than a dozen towns and cities.

Until now, only the local office of the State Security Service (SBU) in Luhansk, a city of 465,000 people less than 30km (20 miles) from the Russian border, had been targeted..............http://www.bbc.com/news/world-europe-27206280

(Belga)
