Deputy FM Gerontopoulos meets with Archbishop Demetrios of America. -MFA

Deputy Foreign Minister Kyriakos Gerontopoulos met on Monday, 31 March – the last day of his visit to the U.S. – with Archbishop Demetrios of America, with whom he discussed issues concerning Orthodoxy and Hellenism abroad.

Following the meeting, Mr. Gerontopoulos made the following statement:

“It was a great honor to be received by His Eminence. I learned a lot from our discussion, for I believe that the Church is the foundation of Hellenism throughout the world. What I want to underscore is that our Patriarchates are the outposts not only of Christianity, but of Hellenism through the globe.

We rely on our Church so that we can convey the message of our culture everywhere. So I thank the Archbishop for keeping Hellenism united here in the U.S., and the Greek American community can, through its work, contribute to the homeland as well.”

Archbishop Demetrios stated that “we are particularly pleased that the Deputy Minister is one of those people who not only empathize with the Greece that is outside of Greece, but also see it from a perspective that combines Orthodoxy and Hellenism. He is the person who is passionately involved, travels round the world, and has already visited distant points on the globe. We welcome him and thank him for his visit, and we wish him every success in his work.”

Mr. Gerontopoulos also visited the Greek school, St. Nikolaos, in Flushing, New York, where he was shown round by the principal and teachers, and talked to Greek American pupils.

• Finally, Mr. Gerontopoulos visited Ground Zero in New York City, where a memorial service was held for the victims of the terrorist attack carried out on the Twin Towers on 11 September 2001. 

• Following the service at the foundations of the new Greek Orthodox Church of St. Nikolaos, which is being constructed close to the site of the Church destroyed in the attack, Mr. Gerontopoulos paid his respects at the memorial to the victims.
