Turkey to defend historical tomb in Syria. -Turkish President Abdullah Gul

Turkish President Abdullah Gul on Sunday vowed to protect the Süleyman Shah Tomb in Syria if it comes under attack, local media reported.

"Some countries have lands outside their homelands. Suleyman Shah Tomb is our land outside Turkey. We will protect it just as we defend our homeland," Gul said.

"It's Turkey's soil and it will have its flag there. Everybody should know this," he added, in response to recent threats from the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant to lower Turkey's national flag on the tomb before March 24.

Last week, Turkey's Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu said Turkey will employ any precautions necessary to protect the historic tomb from attacks.

The Tomb of Suleyman Shah, located in the city of Aleppo in Syria near the Turkish border, is considered to be Turkish territory according to the Treaty of Ankara. The deal was clinched between France and Turkey in 1921 when Syria was under French rule. The 25 km area is now guarded by Turkish soldiers and flies the Turkish flag.

Suleyman Shah was the grandfather of Osman I, founder of the Ottoman State. The tomb was built at the end of the 13th century.(globaltimes.cn)

  1. Turkey's PM Erdogan says those attacking the only Turkish territory out of its borders would face retaliation from Turkey.....

Turkey will retaliate in the case of an attack on the Suleiman Shah Tomb in Syria, Turkey’s only territory beyond its borders, said Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan during a televised interview Tuesday night on domestic and foreign policy issues.

"We will do whatever is necessary in the case of a threat towards our territories," said Erdogan.

Protected by Turkish troops, the Suleyman Shah Tomb and the surrounding area are located in Aleppo's Manbij district, approximately 30 km away from the border with Turkey.

Radical Islamist group Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL), which is deadlocked in intense fighting with the main armed opposition group Free Syrian Army (FSA) around the tomb, has allegedly asked Turkish troops to leave the region.

On the downing of a Syrian army aircraft by Turkish fighter jets on Sunday, Erdogan said it was in accordance with the existing engagement rules between the two countries............http://www.aa.com.tr/en/headline/305708--turkish-pm-chp-hand-in-hand-with-those-attacking-turkey

  2. Recording purports to show Turkish officials discussing Syria operation...

(Reuters) - An anonymous YouTube account on Thursday posted what it said was an audio recording of Turkey's intelligence chief discussing possible military operations in Syria with the foreign minister and the deputy head of the armed forces.

The posting follows similar releases on social media in recent weeks which Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan has cast as a plot orchestrated by his political enemies to undermine him ahead of March 30 elections.

Reuters could not verify the authenticity of the recording, potentially the most damaging purported leak so far as it appeared to have originated from the bugging of a highly confidential and sensitive conversation.........http://www.reuters.com/article/2014/03/27/us-syria-crisis-turkey-idUSBREA2Q17420140327?feedType=RSS&feedName=worldNews
