Pro-Russian Forces Attacked in Crimea, One Dead. – Report

SIMFEROPOL, March 18 (RIA Novosti) – One pro-Russian militiaman was killed and two other wounded on Tuesday in a sniper attack on the streets of the Crimean capital, Simferopol, local media reported.

A unit of pro-Russian self-defense forces came under sniper fire while searching for a group of unidentified gunmen on a tip from local residents, the Kryminform news agency said citing a Crimean police source.

“As a result, one member of self-defense forces was killed and two were wounded,” the source said, adding that the incident could have been a premeditated provocation.
  • Meanwhile, the foreign media circulated reports by the Ukrainian military earlier on Tuesday that a Ukrainian soldier was killed and another wounded during an attack on a Ukrainian military base near Simferopol.

The Ukrainian Defense Ministry, however, failed to identify the forces behind the alleged attack.
  • Following the reports, Reuters cited Ukrainian Prime Minister Arseniy Yatsenyuk as saying that the Ukrainian conflict had moved “from a political one to a military one.”

Shortly after, the Ukrainian Defense Ministry authorized the use of firearms by its servicemen deployed at Crimean bases.
  • The reports of bloodshed from conflicting sides in Crimea come shortly after the signing of a treaty on Tuesday in Moscow reunifying the Ukrainian breakaway region with Russia after 60 years as part of Ukraine.

Until now, forces deployed on the Black Sea peninsula had been told to avoid using arms against attack.

  2. Ukrainian teenager detained on suspicion of firing shots in Crimea...

A 17-year-old resident from western Ukraine has been detained on suspicion of firing sniper shots in Simferopol, said Rustam Temirgaliyev, Crimea's first deputy prime minister.

Temirgaliyev told a local radio on Thursday that two people had died in the shooting incident, which Crimean police had described as a possible provocation.

Sniper shots were fired from one location at two directions, one at a Ukrainian military facility and the other at Crimean self-defense patrols nearby.

Vesti FM radio quoted Crimean police sources as saying that the suspected sniper comes from Lviv, a city in western Ukraine, and is a member of the nationalist Right Sector.

Local law enforcement agencies have been trying to find out whether the teenager was acting alone.

"Someone fired from the window of a partially-constructed building in the immediate vicinity of a military installation at self-defense unit soldiers checking up on a report that armed people had entered that building," said the Crimean Interior Ministry in a press release.

"The other shots were fired at the nearby Ukrainian military installation," it added.

  3. Reports about buildup of peacekeeper forces in Transdniestria denied...

Reports about the buildup of peacekeeper forces in Transdniestria were denied by Vasily Korchmar, the co-chair from Russia in the Joint Control Commission for the peacekeeper operation in Transdniestria.

“The peacekeepers perform their duties in the security zone of the Dniester conflict in a routine mode. The Joint Control Commission made no decision to reinforce them. These are inventions,” Korchmar told reporters.

Peace and stability in the divide zone along the Dniester are maintained by joint peacekeeper forces consisting of the military contingents of Russia (402 servicemen), Moldova (355), Transdniestria (492) and a group of Ukrainian military observers consisting of ten officers.

Nina Shtanski, the foreign minister of the unrecognized republic, said earlier that the Ukrainian side started blocking the passage of trains with loads for the needs of Russian peacekeepers. Men holding Russian passports are not permitted to cross the border. Some 200,000 Russian citizens reside in Transdniestria, she noted.
