UN General Assembly president calls for ‘Olympic Truce’ for 2014 Sochi Games

UNITED NATIONS, January 30, (ITAR-TASS). UN General Assembly President John Ashe has called on United Nations member states to observe the tradition of the Olympic truce ahead of the Winter Olympic Games Russia will host next month in its Black Sea resort of Sochi, the UN reported on its website.
“As President of the General Assembly at its sixty-eighth session, I solemnly appeal to all Member States to demonstrate their commitment to the Olympic Truce for the 2014 Sochi Olympic and Paralympic Games,” Ashe said while reading his Solemn Appeal at the UN Headquarters in New York on Wednesday.

He also urged the UN members “to undertake concrete actions at the local, national, regional and world levels to promote and strengthen a culture of peace and harmony based on the spirit of the Truce.”
“Referring to the original tradition of the Olympic Truce practiced in ancient times, as described in resolution 68/9, I also call upon all warring parties of current armed conflicts around the world to boldly agree to true mutual ceasefires for the duration of the Olympic Truce, thus providing an opportunity to settle disputes peacefully,” Ashe said.
The symbolic Truce will start one week prior to the XXII Olympic Winter Games, to be held on February 7-23 in Sochi, and will be effective until a week after the end of the XI Paralympic Winter Games, due on March 7-16, the UN reported.
  • The UN General Assembly adopted a resolution to support the Olympic Truce for the Sochi Olympics in November 2013, on an initiative from Russia and Greece.
According to the UN, the ancient tradition of the Olympic Truce, or the ekecheiria, was born in Greece in the eighth century BC “to encourage a peaceful environment and ensure safe passage, access and participation for athletes and relevant persons at the Games, thereby mobilizing the youth of the world to the cause of peace.”
In 1992, the tradition was renewed by the International Olympic Committee and supported by a UN General Assembly resolution a year after.
An Itar-Tass correspondent was told in Russia’s permanent mission to the UN earlier that a live broadcast of the competitions will be organized at the UN headquarters.

  1. Sochi 2014: US warns airlines of Russia 'toothpaste' bomb threat...

The US has warned airlines flying into Russia for the Winter Olympics that explosives hidden in toothpaste tubes could be smuggled on to planes.

The Department of Homeland Security told the BBC the alert affected flights direct into Russia as it prepares for the games in Sochi.

The agency said it was not aware of any specific danger to the US at this time.

It is the latest reported threat against the region, which has beefed up security surrounding the games.
    Volgograd bombings

The Department of Homeland Security said in a statement that it "regularly shares information with domestic and international partners, including those associated with international events such as the Sochi Olympics".

The White House National Security Council said the latest threat had not altered existing travel guidelines for Sochi.

"If we should receive information in the coming days and weeks that changes our assessment of whether people should travel to Sochi, we will make that information public," spokeswoman Laura Magnuson told US media.

The US has also placed two warships in the Black Sea in case of a security breach during the games, scheduled for 7-23 February................http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-us-canada-26061903

  2. US Warns of Explosives in Toothpaste Tubes on Flights to Russia ...

U.S. homeland security officials are warning airlines flying to Russia to watch out for toothpaste tubes that may be filled with bomb-making materials.

The officials told U.S. news agencies there is no specific threat at this time, and they gave no details on the intelligence that prompted the warnings.

The Winter Olympics open Friday in Sochi, Russia. Russian President Vladimir Putin visited the Olympics village Wednesday and said that security remains a major concern.

Islamic extremists have threatened to disrupt the games. A jihadist group from Dagestan claimed responsibility for the two suicide attacks that killed 34 people in Volgograd late last year.

Russian media say an Islamic militant suspected of assisting the Volgograd suicide bombers has been killed. Reports say Dzhamaldin Mirzayev died in a shootout with police Wednesday at a house in Dagestan.

Russian authorities have spent an estimated $2 billion to shore up security in advance of the Sochi Olympics. Thousands of security personnel are patrolling what is described as a "ring of steel" around the Black Sea resort to prevent terrorist attacks.
