tempête hivernale qui a fait au moins 11 morts depuis le début de
l’année, le nord des États-Unis se préparait samedi à subir un froid
record, avec des températures ressenties pouvant descendre jusqu’à
-50ºC. Dans les États du centre et du nord du pays, les services
météorologiques prévoyaient pour dimanche après-midi des températures
« se maintenant entre -23ºC et -29ºC, avec des minimales chutant dans la
nuit autour de -34ºC ». Pire encore, avec des vents soufflant en
rafale, les températures ressenties pourraient descendre jusqu’à -45ºC
ou même -51ºC dans ces États !Chicago pourrait battre lundi son record de température la plus basse enregistrée en journée -- soit -24ºC, un niveau atteint le 18 janvier 1994 et le 24 décembre 1983, rappelle The Weather Channel.
Dans le Minnesota (nord), le gouverneur Mark Dayton a d’ores et déjà annoncé que les écoles publiques seraient fermées lundi. Dans le Wisconsin voisin, le match de football américain opposant dimanche les Green Bay Packers aux 49ers de San Francisco --dans le cadre des playoffs de la NFL-- pourrait lui aussi battre le record du match le plus froid de l’histoire de la ligue américaine. La neige qui a recouvert le nord-est des États-Unis et l’est du Canada vendredi, perturbant notamment les transports aériens, pourrait également faire son retour dans une vaste zone allant du sud du Mississippi (sud) jusqu’à l’Ohio (nord), selon les services météo américains.
Coupures de courant massives au Canada
Au Canada voisin, les chutes de neige et la tempête hivernale ont notamment entraîné des coupures de courant massives à Terre-Neuve. À Québec, le thermomètre affichait -29ºC vendredi après un record de -33,9ºC. Il fallait remonter à 1968 pour retrouver des froids aussi polaires. - US faces record low temperatures with fresh cold blast....
Parts of the US are braced for potentially record-breaking low temperatures as an Arctic chill brings more freezing weather.
A winter storm has already blanketed areas of Canada and the north-eastern US with up to 2ft (60 cm) of snow.
It has been blamed for 16 deaths and the cancellation of more than 5,000 flights since Wednesday.
Forecasters say temperatures in the US Mid-West could feel as low as -58F (-50C) with the effect of wind chill.
Authorities have warned residents to remain indoors, both for their own safety and to keep roads clear for snow removal.
'Bitterly cold'
"The coldest weather in years will be making its presence known from the Upper Mid-West to the Mid-Atlantic region," the US National Weather Service said in a statement.
The states of Ohio, South Dakota and Illinois are among those set to be hit.
The weather service said "an incredibly strong surge of bitterly cold Arctic air" would sweep across the country from Saturday night until Tuesday.

Arctic cold front bites northern, central regions of United States....
ReplyDeleteWASHINGTON/CHICAGO/NEW YORK, Jan. 5 (Xinhua) -- Wind chills are wreaking havoc in the northern and central parts of the United States while it has snowed heavily from the Eastern Plain to the Great Lakes of the country due to invasion of arctic cold air.
The National Weather Service said in an advisory posted at its website Sunday that the northern and central parts of the U.S. will expect the coldest temperatures in about two decades because of the polar cold front this week, with some 140 million people to be impacted. Combined with gusty winds, the temperatures will result in "life-threatening wind chill values as low as 60 degrees (Fahrenheit or 51 degrees Celsius) below zero" in some areas.
The extreme cold weather has caused travel nightmares for people who are heading for home from holidays, said local media reports.
In Chicago, the U.S. state of Illinois, a new round of heavy snow started to fall from Saturday. The city's O'Hare International Airport was forced to cancel 1,200 flights as the snowing weather continued Sunday, coupled with gusty winds.............http://english.cntv.cn/20140106/101521.shtml
