EU Urges Ukrainian Opposition to Disavow Violent Elements

MOSCOW, January 27 (RIA Novosti) – The European Union’s representative office in Kiev on Monday urged Ukraine’s opposition to dissociate itself from violent elements in street protests.

“We call upon the opposition to maintain the peaceful character of demonstrations and to dissociate itself clearly from all those who make use of violence in pursuing their aims,” the EU’s delegation to Ukraine said in a statement on its website.

Ukraine’s justice minister threatened Monday to call a state of emergency in the country if demonstrators did not vacate her ministry, one of several state buildings occupied in recent days during a new wave of unrest sparked by the imposition of anti-protest laws on January 16.

In its statement, the EU delegation called on the Ukrainian government to repeal the anti-protest legislation, which it said restricted “fundamental freedoms.”

The EU delegation also affirmed that the bloc “remains committed to economic integration and political association of Ukraine.”

Unrest swelled over the weekend after the opposition rejected President Viktor Yanukovych’s offer to appoint protest leaders as prime minister and deputy prime minister. 2. Ukraine crisis: MPs to vote on scrapping anti-protest law....

Ukraine's parliament is expected to vote on plans to scrap a new anti-protest law in a special session called over the ongoing unrest in the country.

President Viktor Yanukovych has agreed to repeal the legislation, but it is unclear whether MPs will back him.

Opposition to the law has helped fuel deadly clashes between anti-government protesters and police.

Parliament is due to tackle other opposition demands, such as an amnesty for arrested activists.

Mr Yanukovych offered an amnesty only if protesters cleared barricades and stopped attacking government buildings. ...............http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-europe-25923199
