US Senator Visits Ukraine, Backs Opposition Protesters

-
U.S. Senator John McCain met Saturday in the Ukrainian capital with key government and opposition leaders, ahead of a mass rally aimed at forcing the Kyiv government and its leader, President Viktor Yanukovych, from power.

McCain voiced support for protesters who have occupied central Kyiv for much of the past three weeks, telling reporters he is "proud of what the people of Ukraine are doing so they can restore democracy to their country."

McCain is the latest in a string of Western dignitaries to tour the huge makeshift protest encampment since demonstrations erupted last month over a presidential decision to back away from a key trade deal with the European Union. Kyiv says it will instead focus on repairing and strengthening economic ties with Russia.

Moscow had not directly commented on the McCain visit. But Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, speaking Saturday, said Western governments had, in his words, "apparently lost the sense of reality" in opposing Ukraine's turn toward Moscow.

Earlier Saturday, President Yanukovych -- in a bid to ease tensions in the capital -- suspended key government officials for their suspected roles in a violent November 30 police crackdown on demonstrators.

Ukraine's opposition leaders are calling for a new mass protest in Kyiv on Sunday, while supporters of Mr. Yanukovych are also planning a demonstration just a kilometer away.

A poll by Ukraine's non-governmental Research & Branding group released earlier this month shows 46 percent of Ukrainians favoring the EU trade pact. Thirty-six percent were shown favoring a rival trade bloc of former Soviet republics and satellite countries that is being pushed by Moscow.

-John McCain in Ukraine to meet with protesters (2video RT)....

  1. Ukrainian FM assures US senator Kiev prioritises European integration ...

Ukrainian Foreign Minister Leonid Kozhara assured US Senator John McCain on Saturday, December 14, that European integration was Kiev’s foreign policy priority.

“The minister of foreign affairs stressed the priority of Ukraine’s course towards European integration,” the ministry said. Kozhara and McCain discussed Ukrainian-American relations with a focus on the political situation in the country.

Local mass media said that during his visit McCain was planning to meet with members of the Ukrainian government, opposition and public organisations.

The US State Department said earlier in the day that America was working closely with its European allies and partners to help Ukraine take the steps necessary to proceed along the path to European integration.

“Since Ukraine’s independence in 1991, we have supported the Ukrainians as they built democratic skills and institutions, and promoted civic participation and good governance - all of which are preconditions for Ukraine to achieve its European aspirations. We have spent over 5 billion US dollars to assist Ukraine in these and other goals that will ensure a secure, prosperous, and democratic Ukraine,” the State Department said.

The State Department reaffirmed commitment to continuing support for Ukraine in its economic reform efforts and said it would continue to urge the government of Ukraine to work in good faith with the IMF.

  2. Huge rally in Kiev in support of closer ties with EU ....

Some 200,000 people have rallied in the Ukrainian capital Kiev to protest against President Viktor Yanukovych's refusal to sign a landmark EU deal.

Mr Yanukovych backed out of signing the association agreement after months of negotiation, apparently under strong pressure from Russia.

He is to meet Russian President Vladimir Putin in Moscow on Tuesday.

The EU has put any new talks on the agreement on hold until there is a clear commitment to sign.

News agency estimates of the size of the crowd at Independence Square ranged from 150,000 to 300,000.

This is the latest in a series of demonstrations over the past few weeks by the opposition who see Ukraine's future as part of the EU rather than aligned with Russia.

The series of protests, the largest since Ukraine's 2004 Orange Revolution, is designed to push Mr Yanukovych to dismiss his government and call fresh elections, opposition leaders say.

Makeshift barriers around the perimeter of the main protest encampment on Independence Square have been strengthened following an attempt by special police to dismantle them earlier this week.

Opposition leaders have urged protesters to remain vigilant, fearing "provocateurs" could trigger clashes between rival demonstrators.
    'Anti-colonial revolution'

Yuri Lutsenko, a former interior minister and opposition politician, told the protesters on Independence Square they were fighting for independence.

"What is happening on the Maidan [square] today?" he said.

"It is an anti-colonial revolution. Above all, Ukrainians turned out to say to Moscow: 'We are no longer under your command, we are an independent country'."

A leading voice on US foreign policy, Republican Senator John McCain, also addressed the pro-EU protesters after a walkabout in the crowd.......http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-europe-25390654

  5. Russia slaps EU overreaction to Ukrainian U-turn....

The European Union (EU)'s reaction towards Ukraine's suspension to sign an integration deal with it was "bordering on hysteria," Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said Saturday.

After studying the agreement and finding out it was not advantageous to the country, the Ukrainian government made the pullout decision. Yet such "normal" decision had triggered "rabid reaction," from the 28-member block, Lavrov said in an interview with local TV channel Rossiya 24.

"What has the government of Viktor Yanukovych done? Maybe it has withdrawn from an agreement on nuclear weapons proliferation? Or declared it is making an atomic bomb in contravention of its obligations? Or shot someone?" the top Russian diplomat noted.

The Ukrainian government's U-turn move led to mass protests in the country, pushing Yanukovych and government representatives to hold roundtable negotiations with protest leaders to solve the country's political crisis.

During the Friday roundtable talks, Prime Minister Mykola Azarov backed his cabinet decision to halt the agreement, saying that it would have harmed the economy, and pledged to work further to forge ties with the EU.

"We want to agree with the EU the conditions that would allow equalizing the balance of bilateral trade," Azarov said.......http://www.globaltimes.cn/content/832166.shtml#.Uq3lA_sUpqg

  6. Protestcamp-Besuch: US-Senatoren ermuntern Regierungsgegner in Kiew...
