New UN report confirms that chemical weapons in Syria were used by the rebels - Vitaly Churkin, Russia's permanent representative to the UN.

New UN report on the use cases of chemical weapons in Syria confirms Russia’s claim that the toxic substances used in the vicinity of Damascus were carried out by the opposition rebels.
On Friday, Russia's permanent representative to the UN Vitaly Churkin said that Russia intends to prove the fact that the chemical weapons were used by the rebels and not by the government troops.

Churkin also said that the United States has found a country that is willing to provide its port for re-loading of the chemical weapons onto an American ship. He also said that Russia will provide all possible assistance for the transfer of the toxic substances from the storage site in Latakia to the port where the Syrian arsenal will be loaded onto Norwegian and British ships.

The report prepared by UN inspectors that was published yesterday says, that chemical weapons were used at least five times during the past conflicts in Syria. The report also says that those among the dead due to the attacks included soldiers of the government troops as well as civilians.

UN experts have established the use of chemical weapons in five out of the seven sites that they investigated. These include the use of the toxic substances on March 19th in Khan El – Asal, April 29th at Sarakebe, August 21st at Huta, August 24th Jobare Ashrafieh and August 25 at Shanae.

The inspectors could not confirm the use of chemical agents in the area of Sheikh Maqsood on April 13 and Bahar on August 22nd .

According to the report, the experts did not have the task of confirming the side that may have used the chemical weapons during Syria’s internal conflict.

  1. Churkin: Syrian Opposition used chemical weapons in a bid to provoke Western invasion ....

UNITED NATIONS, December 14 (Itar-Tass) - Russia’s UN envoy Vitaly Churkin has said that chemical attacks in Syria, including the one in Guta on August 21, were staged by the Syrian Opposition, which was trying to provoke armed intervention by Western countries. Churkin was speaking at a meeting of the UN General Assembly behind closed doors on Friday. A transcript of his statement has been circulated by Russia’s permanent mission at the United Nations.

“As is known, the Opposition has always wished to see external armed intervention. It is common knowledge that World War II began with a provocation. A provocation triggered the US war in Vietnam and NATO’s bombardments of Serbia. In this (Syrian) case, there was a provocation involved, too, but a big war was prevented with the well-known initiatives,” Churkin said.

  2. Thousands of foreigners have fought in Syria: research group....

(Reuters) - Between 3,300 and 11,000 fighters from more than 70 nations, including a rising number from Western Europe, have joined the struggle in Syria against President Bashar al-Assad, a research group reported on Tuesday.

After security forces repressed peaceful protests against more than 40 years of Assad family rule in 2011, an armed revolt ensued with an increasingly sectarian element. Well over 100,000 people have been killed and millions forced from their homes.

"We estimate that - from late 2011 to 10 December 2013 - between 3,300 and 11,000 individuals have gone to Syria to fight against the Assad government," said the International Centre for the Study of Radicalisation (ICSR), a partnership of five universities based at King's College London.
