Turkey conducted ‘punitive action’ by shooting Syrian helicopter, Turkish FM, Ahmet Davutoğlu, says

Turkish Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoğlu has said that Turkey conducted a “punitive action” by downing a Syrian helicopter, justifiable in terms of international justice and rules of engagement as the helicopter violated Turkish air space despite warnings.

A Syrian helicopter was shot down by The Turkish Air Force at the border after the helicopter violated Turkish airspace.

Davutoğlu stressed that Turkey would not accept any violation of its borders.

"As it was before, we are decisive about protecting our borders and citizens to the end ... The necessary information [about the incident] will be handed to NATO, the United Nations Security Council, and the U.N. General Secretary," he said.

  • "Nobody will dare to violate Turkey's borders again. The necessary measures have been taken," the foreign minister added.

  • Turkish warplanes shoot down Syrian helicopter. -Syrian plane was detected two kilometers (1.2 miles) inside Turkish airspace

Turkish warplanes downed a Syrian helicopter on Monday after it violated Turkish airspace. Turkish Deputy Prime Minister Bulent Arinc said a Syrian plane was detected two kilometers (1.2 miles) inside Turkish airspace at 2:20pm (1120 GMT).
“It was continuously warned by our air defense but as the violation continued, it fell on Syrian soil, having been hit by missiles from our planes,” he added, according to statements carried by Agence France Press.

Turkey, one of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad's fiercest critics, has advocated military intervention in Syria and grown frustrated over what it sees as Western indecisiveness. http://english.alarabiya.net/en/News/world/2013/09/16/Turkish-warplanes-shoot-down-Syrian-helicopter.html 16/9/13

  1. Noone could any more dare to violate Turkish borders...

Davutoglu said Syrian helicopter was shot down by Turkish fighter jets that continued border breach of 2 kilometres into the Turkish land, despite warnings
PARIS (AA) - Turkish Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu said on Monday that "Noone could any more dare to violate Turkish borders in any way. We have taken all related precautions."

Following the meeting with his US, British, French, Qatari and Saudi Arabian counterparts in France to discuss the chemical weapons agreement on Syria and a related French-drafted UN resolution, Davutoglu spoke to the press in Turkish Embassy in Paris, the French capital.

Turkish top diplomat remarked on the Syrian helicopter which was shot down by Turkish fighter jets upon border breach of 2 kilometres into the Turkish land.

"A Syrian helicopter was detected 5 miles off the Turkish-Syrian border. Upon 2-km border breach of the Turkish airspace, the Syrian helicopter was constantly warned by Turkish air defense forces. As the breaching continued, our fighter jets shot down the Syrian helicopter," he noted.

Davutoglu stated that he would brief the United Nations Secretary-General, NATO and UN Security Council member states regarding the issue.

"Noone could any more dare to violate Turkish borders in any way. We have taken all related precautions," he argued.

Turkish top diplomat added that the foreign ministers with whom he was proceeding the talks in Paris also expressed their full support on Turkey's border security.

Touching on the disposal of Syria's chemical weapons, Davutoglu said "The solution for the chemical weapons in Syria does not serve as to end the Syrian crisis itself. The crisis might escalate further even without the use of chemical weapons."

"We've seen the consequences of violating international laws previously in Halabja, Bosnia and Srebrenica. The Syrian regime must be blocked from using bloody methods in order to prevent more pains in Syria," he concluded.

The Syrian military on Tuesday accused Turkey of seeking to escalate tensions along the two nations' already volatile border by shooting down a Syrian military helicopter there the day before.

  3. Syrian Army: Downed Helicopter Not on Combat Mission ...

The Syrian army slammed the Turkish warplanes’ shooting down of a Syrian military helicopter as hasty saying the helicopterpter was not on a combat mission.

The army statement described Turkey’s move in downing the helicopter as “hasty", adding that Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan's government is trying to escalate tensions with such a move.

"Given that the helicopter was on its way back and that it was not on a combat mission, the hasty Turkish reaction is proof of the true intentions of Erdogan's government towards Syria, which are to create tension and escalate the situation at the border between the two countries," it added.

The statement also noted that the military helicopter was "lost... while it was on a reconnaissance mission to monitor the infiltration of terrorists via the Turkish border".

On Monday, Deputy Prime Minister Bulent Arinc told reporters that a Syrian MI-17 helicopter was downed over the southern province of Hatay after it strayed two kilometers into Turkish airspace.

Arinc said there was no information about the fate of the crew because the helicopter fell on Syrian soil. He also noted that Turkish air defense had repeatedly warned the Syrian helicopter to leave Turkey's airspace before being hit by missiles.

  4. Turkey expects no retaliation after shooting Syrian helicopter...

Underlining that a Syrian military helicopter shot down by Turkish Armed Forces (TSK) on Sept. 16 had violated the Turkish air space on purpose, not “mistakenly” as claimed by the Syrian military, Turkey’s Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoğlu said on Sept. 17 that they expected no retaliation from the Syrian regime.

Davutoğlu, speaking in an interview with A Haber television channel, however, also declared his country’s readiness in case of a new threat against its security and national interests.

Turkey is ready for any kind of possibility, Davutoğlu replied when asked whether they expected any retaliation from Syria.

“Turkey and the Turkish Armed Forces are both instructed and prepared in such a way as to be capable of responding in an instant to all kinds of violations against the security of our country and borders. In that regard, in order to protect our security and national interests, we are prepared for all kinds of developments that may take place from now on in regard to all scenarios. However, we are not expecting any retaliation,” Davutoğlu added.

The Turkish minister was reminded of the Syrian army’s statement in which it blamed the Turkish side for showing “a hasty reaction.”

“A comment such as ‘hastiness’ is actually an acknowledgement of the crime,” Davutoğlu said, reiterating that such a statement itself exposed that the Syrian side committed a border violation.

  5. Army downed Syrian helicopter 'according to rules of engagement,’ Turkish PM says...

The government has provided the Turkish army with the authority to act according to the rules of engagement in the event of any border violation, Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoğan said today in regard to the military’s downing of a Syrian helicopter the previous day.

Asked by reporters if the army had informed the government about the Syrian helicopter’s violation before taking the decision to shoot it down, Erdoğan said the military was instructed to execute the rules of engagement.

“We have given our Armed Forces authority in certain areas. With respect to the Syrian issue, we have carried out a delegation of authority in terms of the rules of engagement,” Erdoğan said during a joint press conference in Ankara with visiting Pakistani counterpart Nawaz Sharif.

“We had stated before that the rules of engagement would be implemented. There was a border violation of up to two kilometers,” Erdoğan said, emphasizing that the Syrian pilots had not changed the helicopter’s course despite repeated warnings.

“When the warnings were not heeded, the Turkish Armed Forces executed the rules of engagement,” he said.

  6. Turkish Air Force rewards soldiers who downed Syrian chopper...

The Turkish Air Force on Sept. 22 paid tribute to the soldiers who shot down a Syrian military helicopter last week which was held responsible of violating Turkish airspace.

Air Force Commander Gen. Akın Öztürk has "rewarded the personnel who applied rules of engagement toward a Syrian helicopter which refused to leave the airspace last week despite warnings," the Air Force Command said in a statement.

Turkish warplanes on Sept. 16 downed the Syrian helicopter which Ankara said was detected two kilometres inside Turkish airspace. Turkey changed its rules of engagement after the downing of one of its fighter jets by the Syrian Air Force in June 2012.

The government had warned that any military approach from Syria on the Turkish border would be considered a threat.

  7. F-16 jets sent to border as Syrian planes approached Turkish airspace: Army...

Turkey sent four F-16 fighter jets to the border as Syrian aircraft approached Turkish airspace on Oct. 5, Turkish armed forced have said.

Two F-16 fighter jets scrambled from Diyarbakır airbase for patrolling, then headed to the region as Syrian planes approached the border, said the statement yesterday.

One Syrian SU-24 plane approached the Öncüpınar/Kilis border region, and then moved away only 5.6 sea miles from the Turkish border, the army said yesterday, adding that the Syrian SU-24 plane approached to Cilvegözü/Hatay border region, and moved back 8.6 sea miles from the Turkish border.

Turkish warplanes headed to the region as a Syrian SU-24 plane approached the southern border of Öncüpınar/Kilis, which then moved away only 10 sea miles from the Turkish border, said the statement.

Two other F-16 warplanes scrambled from İncirlik airbase for routine patrolling duty, headed for the border as Syrian MI-17 helicopter approached the border of southern Karbeyaz/Hatay, but the Syrian air vehicle moved away 4 sea miles from the Turkish border, said the statement.

  8. Turkey fighter jets intercept Syrian plane...

Turkey scrambled two F-16 fighter jets as a Syrian MIG-23 plane approached Turkish airspace, general staff of the Turkish Armed Forces said in a written statement late Sunday.

Two F-16 planes headed to Turkish-Syrian border near Yayladagi village of Hatay province when the Syrian plane approached the area, said the statement, adding that the Syrian plane moved away only five sea miles to Turkish border.

As a Syrian MI-17 helicopter approached to the Turkish border, two Turkish F-16 jets headed to the region for interception, Turkish Armed Forces also stated.

Turkish war jets intercept any Syrian planes approaching to the border region since a Turkish plane was shot down in 2012 by Syrian army when the plane reportedly violated the Syrian airspace, according to local media.

A Turkish F-16 jet shot down a Syrian MI-17 helicopter last September, saying it made a 2-km-incursion into its airspace ignoring warnings.

Turkey, once an ally of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad but now a leading voice urging his ouster, has reportedly provided Syrian rebel army leaders with sanctuary.
