John Kerry: 1,429 people killed in Syrian chemical weapons attack. -"We are not alone in our will to do something about" (FULL VIDEO 30-8-13)

 -
A preliminary U.S. government assessment of last week's chemical weapons attack in Syria has made these key findings:

--100 videos attributed to a suspected chemical weapons attack in Syria "show large numbers of bodies exhibiting physical signs consistent with, but not unique to, nerve agent exposure." Some videos show what appear to be fatalities "with no visible injuries" -- imagery "consistent with death from chemical weapons, and inconsistent with death from small-arms, high-explosive munitions or blister agents," said the report, released Friday.

--1,429 people were killed in an August 21 chemical weapons attack in Syria and asserted that "we assess with high confidence that the Syrian government carried out the chemical weapons attack against opposition elements in the Damascus suburbs."

-- The United States says it has "intelligence that leads us to assess that Syrian chemical weapons personnel ... were preparing chemical weapons munitions prior to" what Washington believes was a chemical weapons attack in the Damascus suburbs on August 21. "In the three days prior to the attack, we collected streams of human, signals and geospatial intelligence that reveal regime activities that we assess were associated with preparations for a chemical weapons attack," the U.S. government said in its assessment released Friday.

Citing support from the Arab League, Turkey and France, Secretary of State John Kerry said Friday that "we are not alone in our will to do something about" last week's chemical weapons attack in Syria that he blamed on the regime of President Bashar al-Assad.

Kerry added that the United States "makes our own decisions on our own timelines, based on our own values and interests" in signaling a possible military response to last week's chemical weapons attack in Syria.

  1. Kerry: U.S. response to Syria won’t involve ‘boots on the ground’...

WASHINGTON – Secretary of State John Kerry says the U.S. knows based on intelligence that the Syrian regime carefully prepared for days to launch a chemical weapons attack, but says U.S. response will not involve “boots on the ground.”

Kerry says Syrian regime personnel were at the site of the attack for three days beforehand, making preparations.

“We know the Syrian regime elements were told to prepare for the attack by putting on gas masks and taking precautions associated with chemical weapons. We know that these were specific instructions,” said Kerry.

He says regime elements were told to prepare by putting on gas masks.

Kerry says the U.S. also knows where the rockets were launched from. He says the rockets came from regime-controlled areas, and went “only to” opposition-controlled areas.

“And we know just 90 minutes later, all hell broke loose on social media,” he said.

Kerry also says a senior regime official confirmed that the weapons were used and was afraid it would be discovered. He said the U.S. government knows at least 1,429 Syrians were killed in the chemical weapons attack, including at least 426 children.

“We saw rows of children lying side by side sprawled on a hospital floor, all of them dead from Assad’s gas, and surrounded by parents and grandparents who had suffered the same fate,” he said.

When it comes to action, Kerry said discussions will continue with Congress, U.S. allies, and “most importantly” the American people.

“President Obama will ensure that the United States of America makes our own decisions on our own timelines, based on our values and our interests,” he said.

“Whatever decision President Obama makes in Syria, it will bear no resemblance to Afghanistan, Iraq or even Libya. It will not involve any boots on the ground. It will not be open-ended and it will not assume responsibility for a civil war that is already well underway.”

The U.S. is releasing a public report on intelligence gathered about last week’s deadly attack. President Barack Obama is preparing for a possible military strike in response.

  2. Kerry Outlines Evidence of Chemical Attack by Syria...

Secretary of State John Kerry declared on Friday there was “clear” and “compelling” evidence that the government of President Bashar al-Assad used poison gas against its citizens, as the Obama administration released an unclassified intelligence report on the use of chemical weapons in Syria.

“Read for yourselves the evidence from thousands of sources,” Mr. Kerry said in aggressively laying out the administration’s case for strikes on Syria. “This is the indiscriminate, inconceivable horror of chemical weapons. This is what Assad did to his own people.”

Mr. Kerry said that more than 1,400 people were killed in the chemical attack, including more than 400 children.

A four-page intelligence summary released by the White House said the government had concluded that the Assad government had “carried out a chemical weapons attack” outside Damascus, based on human sources as well as communications intercepts. The suggestion that the opposition might have been responsible “is highly unlikely,” the assessment said.

Mr. Kerry said the administration had “high confidence” in the intelligence, much of which was being released to the public as he spoke. But he vowed that the government had carefully reviewed the evidence to avoid the kind of intelligence failures that preceded the Iraq war.

“We will not repeat that moment,” he said.

Mr. Kerry said the time for questions about what happened in Syria had passed.

“The question is whether we — we collectively — what are we and the world going to do about it?” Mr. Kerry said. He said that taking action in the face of the use of chemical weapons “matters deeply to the credibility and the future interests of the United States.”

Mr. Kerry acknowledged that the public in the United States was weary of war, saying that he, too, was tired after the years of military conflicts in Afghanistan and Iraq. But he said that should not be used as an excuse not to act.

“Fatigue does not absolve us of our responsibility,” he declared. “Just longing for peace does not necessarily bring it about.”

American intelligence agencies in the three days before the Aug. 21 attack detected signs of activities by the Syrian authorities “associated with preparations for a chemical weapons attack,” the assessment said. Syrian chemical weapons personnel were operating in the suburb of Adra from Aug. 18 until early on the morning of Aug. 21. On that date, it added, a “Syrian regime element prepared for a chemical weapons attack,” including the use of gas masks.

Spy satellites detected rocket launchings from government-controlled territory 90 minutes before the first reports of a chemical weapons attack. The intelligence agencies said they had identified more than 100 videos attributed to the attack, many showing large numbers of bodies with physical signs consistent with nerve agents, and they added that the Syrian opposition “does not have the capability to fabricate all of the videos.”

The agencies also said they intercepted the communications of a senior Syrian official who “confirmed that chemical weapons were used by the regime on Aug. 21 and was concerned with the U.N. inspectors obtaining evidence,” the assessment said. It added that on the afternoon of that day, Syrian chemical weapons personnel were directed to cease operations....http://www.nytimes.com/2013/08/31/world/middleeast/john-kerry-syria.html?_r=0

  6. U.S. urges Hungary to condemn Syria's alleged use of chemical weapons...
BUDAPEST, Aug 30 (Xinhua) -- The United States has requested the Hungarian government to join the U.S. in condemning Syria's government for the alleged use of chemical weapons, Hungarian News Agency MTI reported on Friday.

"We urge the Hungarian government to join us in condemning publicly the Syrian government's use of chemical weapons and in urging the international community to hold the regime accountable for this violation of a bedrock international norm", the U.S. embassy in Budapest said in a statement, according to the report.

Gabor Kaleta, press chief of the Hungarian foreign ministry said on Friday that Hungary would formulate its position on Syria in close cooperation with its allies. He said that Hungary firmly condemns the use of chemical weapons.

Kaleta added that Hungary had earlier broke diplomatic ties with Syria's government, which Hungary does not recognise as the country's legitimate representative.
