Greece to Censor F.Y.R.O.M.’s Name

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has published a response of Deputy Minister Kostas Tsiaras to the question by "neo-fascist" party Golden Dawn “over the use of name FYROM and its derivatives from the former Yugoslav Republic of "Macedonia" at diplomatic and commercial level”.
The response says the MoFA is continually monitoring all developments in the name issue. Furthermore, it is stated the bilateral memorandum on practical measures stipulates that if FYROM’s constitutional name is placed at imported products, “then the importer must put a sticker with Skopje’s interim name”.

Pertaining to FYROM’s recognition by third countries under its constitutional name, Tsiaras says, “very few UN member-states” have recognized FYROM under that name “through exchange of verbal notes by permanent representatives of the countries in the UN, even without informing their ministries of foreign affairs”.
Tsiaras says all international organizations under UN aegis use the country’s interim name.
“It is rare for bodies to use the name that is unacceptable by Greece, but immediately correct themselves when intervened appropriately”, reads the press release.
FYROM has established relations with 167 out of 194 UN member-states. Of them, 134 countries have recognized the FYROM under its constitutional name.
