Ukraine marks second anniversary of Maidan protests

Ukrainians on Saturday marked the second anniversary of the violent Maidan protests in central Kiev that left more than 100 demonstrators and several policemen dead.

But two years on, many people are still wondering what exactly happened during what has been dubbed as the Euromaidan revolution, which culminated in the ouster of pro-Kremlin president Viktor Yanukovich.

Why haven't any of the officers serving under Yanukovitch – and who have been blamed for the protester deaths – been punished? And why does Ivan Bubenchik, the Maidan protester who insists he was the one to pull the trigger on two of the four policemen who were killed, remain a free man?

The confusion has added to the sombre mood that has descended over Kiev.

Today, Ukraine remains in a political crisis, where still-rampant corruption is angering more and more Ukrainians, including Bubenchik, the self-proclaimed police killer, himself.
