Moscow denies accusations that Russia and Syria bombed Idlib school

The Russian foreign ministry denied Thursday that it was involved in the bombing of a school in Syria that killed 35 people.

On Wednesday, an airstrike against a school in the Idlib region, almost completely under the control the formerly al-Qaeda-linked Jabhat Fateh al-Sham, killed at least 22 children.

Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said in a press conference that the accusations were a lie and demanded a full investigation be initiated immediately.

United Nations children's fund director Anthony Lake said on Wednesday that if the attack was deliberate, then it is a war crime.

According to Lake, this could be the deadliest attack on a school since the war in Syria began.

"When will the world's revulsion at such barbarity be matched by insistence that this must stop?" he said.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights immediately accused Russian warplanes of having committed the attack.

In the last week, some 90 people have been killed in Russian and Syrian bombings in Idlib.
