Clashes erupt in Yemen hours after ceasefire begins

Violent clashes erupted in Yemen on Thursday hours after a ceasefire backed by the United Nations began, announced the army loyal to the beleaguered president.

In a statement, President Abdrabbuh Mansour Hadi's army said fighting had broken out with Houthi rebels, who are supported by former President Ali Abdullah Saleh, on the border with Saudi Arabia.

The statement said Houthis launched missiles against army positions in the northwestern town of Harad.

The governmental army also announced that its members pushed back a Houthi attack in the mountains in the northern al-Jawf governorate.

There have so far been no reports of airstrikes by the Saudi Arabian-led coalition against Houthi and pro-Saleh targets since the ceasefire came into place.

The UN announced Monday that both sides of the conflict had agreed to a 72-hour ceasefire which was to begin Wednesday at 11:59 pm local time.

This is the sixth ceasefire declared in Yemen since the start of the intervention by the Riyadh-led coalition in March 2015, which made the conflict worsen.

Previous ceasefires, as well as attempts at peace negotiations, have all ended in failure.

Roughly 7,000 people have died in the conflict and more than three million have been displaced, according to UN figures.
