Iran Informs EU on Steps to Protect Saudi Diplomats

Iranian Foreign Minister Javad Zarif informed on Sunday EU Foreign Policy Chief Federica Mogherini on measures implemented by Tehran to protect Saudi diplomats amid protests following the execution of Shiite cleric Sheikh al-Nimr by Saudi Arabian authorities.

On Saturday, demonstrators protesting in Tehran against the execution of Sheikh al-Nimr attacked the Saudi embassy. Local police reportedly detained 40 protesters.

"During the long conversation, HRVP Mogherini was informed of the incident at the Saudi embassy and of the steps taken by the Iranian authorities to defuse the tensions and protect the Saudi diplomats," the European External Action Service (EEAS) said following the phone talks between the officials.

Sheikh al-Nimr was among 47 people convicted of terrorism whose execution was announced by the Saudi Interior Ministry on Saturday. He was sentenced to death on charges of inciting hatred and disobedience to the Saudi king in 2014.

Foreign Minister Adel al-Jubeir told a news conference Iran's diplomatic mission and related entities in Saudi Arabia had been given 48 hours to leave. He said Riyadh would not allow the Islamic Republic to undermine the Sunni kingdom's security.

Iranian protesters stormed the Saudi embassy in Tehran early on Sunday and Shi'ite Muslim Iran's top leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, predicted "divine vengeance" for the execution of Sheikh Nimr al-Nimr, an outspoken opponent of the kingdom's ruling Al Saudi family.

Jubeir said the attack in Tehran was in line with what he said were earlier Iranian assaults on foreign embassies there and with Iranian policies of destabilising the region by creating "terrorist cells" in Saudi Arabia.....REUTERS........dailystar.com.lb
