Russia says strikes weakening Syria 'terror' groups. 600 mercenaries are trying to find their way into Europe

Russia's Air Force has carried out more than 60 flights in Syria in the past 72 hours and significantly reduced the military potential of terrorists there, a senior official in the Russian army told Russian news agencies on Saturday.

The official, Andrei Kartapolov from the Russian army's General Staff, said Russia's Air Force had targeted more than 50 ISIS objects in its airstrikes.

"The strikes were carried out around the clock from the Hmeymim air base along the whole depth of the territory of Syria," Kartapolov said, according to RIA news agency.

"We will not only continue strikes..., we will also increase their intensity," he said.

He said Russia had warned the United States ahead of launching its air strikes and recommended that the United States stop its own flights in areas where Russia's air force was operating.

"The Americans told us during discussions, that no one apart from terrorists were in that region," Kartapolov said, referring to the area where Russia's Air Force was active, according to Interfax.

  • He also said Russian strikes targeting ISIS have sown "panic", forcing some 600 militants to abandon their positions and head to Europe.

"Our intelligence shows that militants are leaving areas under their control. Panic and desertion have started in their ranks."

A Russian military official said "panic and desertion" had started among the militants and some 600 "mercenaries" were trying to escape to Europe.

However, Britain said Russia's strikes were supporting its ally, Syrian President Bashar al-Assad.

The West says Russia is also hitting non-IS rebels. Moscow denies the claim.

There have been reports that a number of Syrian civilians have been killed in the Russian air strikes, which began on 30 September.
