EU urges 'recommitment to solution process' in Turkey

EU Enlargement Commissioner Johannes Hahn has acknowledged Turkey’s commitment to fight Daesh, but also expressed concern over tensions between the Turkish army and the outlawed Kurdistan Worker's Party (PKK).

According to a statement released by the European Commission late Monday, Hahn spoke to Turkey’s EU Minister Volkan Bozkir and reaffirmed EU’s support in the fight against Daesh (ISIS/ISIL).

"Commissioner [Hahn] stressed that all parties should re-commit to the peace process [solution process] and work now on a broad and inclusive political solution," the statement said.

"We count on Turkey to live up to its important and strategic role for the whole region, by refraining from any action that could further destabilize the region," Hahn said.

"The EU acknowledges that Turkey has the right to prevent and react to any form of terrorism, which must be unequivocally condemned," the statement added.

"The response, however, must be proportionate, targeted and by no means endanger the democratic political dialogue in the country," it said.

Hahn also spoke with Turkey’s pro-Kurdish Peoples' Democratic Party (HDP) Co-Chairman Selahattin Demirtas on the phone Friday, calling on all parties to commit to the “solution process”.

The "solution process" refers to dialogue between the Turkish government and the PKK, which began in 2013 but has been stalled after recent murders of a number of police officers and soldiers in the country.

The PKK is considered a terrorist organization by Turkey, the EU and U.S.

Security forces have come under attack across the country since the July 20 Daesh-suspected Suruc bombing in southeastern Turkey, which killed 32 people.
