Russia Calls for Pause in Yemen Airstrikes to Provide Humanitarian Aid

Russia on Saturday presented a draft resolution to the UN Security Council, calling for a humanitarian pause in the Saudi-led airstrikes against Houthi rebels in Yemen, a source in a Western delegation said.

The document was distributed Saturday during a UN Security Council's extraordinary session in New York, the source told RIA Novosti. The meeting was called by Moscow amid reports that escalating hostilities in Yemen have been claiming civilian lives.

  • Earlier on Saturday, the Red Cross, an international aid agency, urged to halt hostilities in Yemen for 24 hours to allow for help to be delivered to people in the conflict-torn country.
Yemeni population has been trapped in a confrontation between Houthi insurgents and loyalists of Yemeni President Abd Rabbuh Mansur Hadi, who is believed to be outside the country.

The launch of a Saudi-led military campaign in Yemen on March 25 saw the death toll among the Yemeni population sharply escalate. Some 519 people, including 90 children, have been killed and about 1,700 injured in Yemen in the past two weeks, UN humanitarian chief Valerie Amos said Friday.

  1. Yemen crisis: Red Cross calls for 24-hour ceasefire...

The Red Cross has called for a 24-hour ceasefire in Yemen to bring in desperately needed medical supplies after fierce fighting.

It says medical teams and rescuers must access Aden, a stronghold of those loyal to President Abdrabbuh Mansour Hadi, or more civilians will die.

Fighting in the southern port city has intensified with Saudi-led airstrikes aiming to push back Shia Houthi rebels.

Russia, too, has called at the United Nations for a truce.

It presented a draft resolution to an emergency session of the Security Council in New York, calling for a "humanitarian pause" in air strikes by the Saudi-led coalition to allow the evacuation of foreigners.

The draft, however, makes no mention of a halt to fighting by the Houthis.

It also demands "rapid, safe and unhindered humanitarian access to ensure that humanitarian assistance reaches people in need".

Jordan's ambassador to the UN and current Council chairman Dina Kawar said members would need time to consider the draft...............http://www.bbc.com/news/world-middle-east-32185182

  3. The International Committee Red Cross has received approval from the Saudi-led military coalition conducting air strikes against Shia Houthis in Yemen to bring in vital medical supplies and aid workers, a spokeswoman said on Sunday...

The aid agency has been negotiating for nearly a week to deliver life-saving supplies and equipment to Yemen, where there have been 11 days of air strikes by the coalition, which now controls the country's ports and air space.

"We have received permission from the coalition for two planes now, one carrying supplies and one with staff," ICRC spokeswoman Sitara Jabeen said.

The ICRC hoped that the aircraft could land on Monday in the capital Sana'a, she said.
