Deadly clashes between pro-secular militias and Islamist militants have
erupted over the weekend in west of Libya's capital of Tripoli, killing
at least 21 and wounded dozens of others, medical sources said on
Sunday (12.10.14).
A senior commander in the pro-secular Zintan militia said that their fighters mounted the attack against the Islamist Libya Dawn forces on Friday at al-Gualish region near the town of Kikla, some 150 kilometers west of Tripoli.
The source also claimed that their Zintani fighters have secured the town on Saturday morning and the local people welcomed their entry.
However, some sources close to Libya Dawn said the Islamist militants have not retreated but foiled the assaults, forcing their enemies back to their main bases in Zintan.
Medical sources said the fighting has killed at least 21 and injured 60 others. The official LANA news agency said that the fighting has forced many families of western Libyan region to flee.
Libya has witnessed a drastic escalation of violence since May when deadly clashes erupted between Islamist militants and pro- secular militias. The deadly fighting still flares near Tripoli, Benghazi and Gharyan.
