Kerry says Russia stirs 'chaos' in Ukraine as a pretext for more military intervention

US secretary of state says Russia sent "agents" to destabilise Ukraine, as pro-Russians seize offices in eastern cities.

US Secretary of State John Kerry has bluntly blamed Russia of "unmistakable involvement in destabilising" Ukraine by sending "agents" to its eastern cities.

Kerry on told US Congress on Tuesday that the Kremlin was seeking to "create chaos" in Donetsk, Kharkiv and Luhansk as a pretext for more military intervention.

"Everything that we've seen in the last 48 hours, from Russian provocateurs and agents operating in eastern Ukraine, tells us that they've been sent there determined to create chaos," Kerry said, adding that he would meet next week with Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov to discuss the crisis.
  • Shortly after Kerry's comments, Ukraine's state security service (SBU) said pro-Russian activists placed explosives in a seized government office in Luhansk, holding about 60 people hostage.
"These actions are extremely dangerous and endanger the lives of people both inside and outside of the building. They are using terrorist measures," the SBU said in a statement.
Luhansk pro-Russian protesters quickly denied the claims.
"There are no explosives, no hostages. We do not need hostages to get what we want," said Anton, one of the protesters who described himself as a coordinator of the action.............[aljazeera.com]

  • US: Russia is Fueling Unrest in Ukraine

U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry has told U.S. senators that Russia is fueling separatist unrest in Eastern Ukraine that could be what he called a "contrived crisis" to justify military intervention.

Kerry told the Senate Foreign Relations committee Tuesday that Russia's involvement in pro-Russia unrest in at least three Ukrainian cities is "clear and unmistakable." He said U.S. President Obama is preparing a far-tougher set of sanctions on Russia if Moscow continues its efforts to destabilize Ukraine.

Kerry said Russia has a choice to work with the international community in a way that allows Ukraine to become a bridge between East and West, or it could face greater isolation and pay the cost of its actions.

Earlier Tuesday, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov told reporters in Moscow that the southeastern parts of Ukraine should be included in talks about the country's future. He said Russia wants to see those regions, which are largely Russian-speaking, represented in multilateral talks.

Also Tuesday, Russia's foreign ministry called on Ukraine to halt what it called military preparations in the southeast that could lead to civil war.

And in Paris, NATO chief Anders Fogh Rasmussen warned that further Russian intervention in Ukraine would be an "historic mistake" that would further isolate Russia from the world. Instead, he said, Russia should pull back its troops, fulfill its international commitments, and engage in constructive dialogue with Ukraine...................... [voanews.com]

  1. Kerry attackiert Russland...

  6. Ukraine in 48-hour ultimatum to east's pro-Russia activists...

Ukraine's interior minister has warned pro-Russian activists who have taken over state buildings in eastern cities to enter talks to find a political solution or face "force".

Arsen Avakov said the situation would "be resolved in 48 hours" either way.

Earlier, a number of people held inside a state security building in Luhansk since Sunday were freed.

The EU, Russia, US and Ukraine are to meet next week in the first four-way meeting since the crisis erupted.

The talks are aimed at breaking the impasse since Russia annexed the southern Ukrainian peninsula of Crimea in February. Russian troops are now massed along the borders of the two countries.
