Duma vice-speaker: Crimea’s parliament makes “historical” decision

The Crimean legislature’s approval of the idea the peninsula may join Russia is a historical decision, the State Duma’s Deputy Speaker Sergei Neverov said in an interview to Itar-Tass on Thursday.

“We are one nation split because of [Communist] party functionaries’ irresponsibility,” said Neverov, secretary of the General Council of the ruling party, United Russia.

First Deputy Prime Minister of the Autonomous Republic of Crimea Rustam Temirgaliev told Itar-Tass on Thursday the autonomy’s legislature had approved in principle the republic’s accession to Russia as one of its constituent regions. A referendum on the issue is scheduled for March 16.

  • Crimea’s Parliament Decides to Secede to Russia.

The parliament of Crimea, a majority ethnic Russian region within Ukraine, decided Thursday to secede from the country and become part of Russia.
A popular vote to approve that decision or restore the 1992 Crimean Constitution, whereby the peninsula would remain an autonomous republic within Ukraine, is scheduled for March 16, according to a statement posted on the legislature's website.
The ballot, to be printed in the Russian, Ukrainian and Tatar languages, will include only those two questions, according to the statement. Neither question would allow voters to indicate a preference for independence.
The referendum was originally scheduled to be held May 25, the same day as Ukraine’s early presidential election.

Rallies around the predominantly Russian-speaking peninsula following the formation of the new government in Kiev have openly called for secession and annexation by Russia.
Crimean officials have refused to recognize as legitimate the new central government in Kiev, which ousted President Viktor Yanukovych on February 22........................http://en.ria.ru/world/20140306/188146402/Crimeas-Parliament-Decides-to-Secede-to-Russia.html

BLOCKING PROPERTY OF CERTAIN PERSONS CONTRIBUTING TO THE SITUATION IN UKRAINE

By the authority vested in me as President by the Constitution and the laws of the United States of America, including the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (50 U.S.C. 1701 et seq.) (IEEPA), the National Emergencies Act (50 U.S.C. 1601 et seq.) I, BARACK OBAMA, President of the United States of America, find that the actions and policies of persons -- including persons who have asserted governmental authority in the Crimean region without the authorization of the Government of Ukraine -- that undermine democratic processes and institutions in Ukraine; threaten its peace, security, stability, sovereignty, and territorial integrity; and contribute to the misappropriation of its assets, constitute an unusual and extraordinary threat to the national security and foreign policy of the United States, and I hereby declare a national emergency to deal with that threat. 2. Statement by the Press Secretary on Ukraine. -The White House, Office of the Press Secretary....

As President Obama has made clear, the United States is pursuing and reviewing a wide range of options in response to Russia’s ongoing violation of Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity – actions that constitute a threat to peace and security and a breach of international law, including Russia’s obligations under the UN Charter and of its 1997 military basing agreement with Ukraine, and that are inconsistent with the 1994 Budapest Memorandum and the Helsinki Final Act.

Pursuant to the President’s guidance, today the State Department is putting in place visa restrictions on a number of officials and individuals, reflecting a policy decision to deny visas to those responsible for or complicit in threatening the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Ukraine. This new step stands in addition to the policy already implemented to deny visas to those involved in human rights abuses related to political oppression in Ukraine................http://www.whitehouse.gov/the-press-office/2014/03/06/statement-press-secretary-ukraine

  3. Ukraine PM says military ‘ready to protect our country’...

Ukraine’s interim prime minister on Thursday said the country’s armed forces would act if Russia’s military intervention escalated and slammed as “illegitimate” a decision to hold a referendum on whether the region should become part of Russia.

In a news conference in Brussels, Prime Minister Arseny Yatseniuk said that any decree making Crimea part of Russia was an illegitimate move and that Crimea was and would remain an integral part of the country.

"This is an illegitimate decision and this so-called referendum has no legal grounds at all. That's the reason why we urge the Russian government not to support those who support separatism in the Ukraine," Yatseniuk said of the vote to be held on March 16th.

"Crimea is was and will be an integral part of Ukraine," he said, while urging Russia to withdraw its military from Crimea.

Yatseniuk added that Ukraine’s armed forces would act if Russian military intervention escalated any further in to Ukraine's territory.

"In case of further escalation and military intervention into the Ukrainian territory by foreign forces, the Ukrainian government and Ukrainian military will act in accordance with the constitution and laws," he said. “We are ready to protect our country.”...........http://www.france24.com/en/20140306-crimea-referendum-decision-illegitimate-ukraine-pm-says-military-russia/

  4. Obama says Crimea referendum would violate international law....

President Barack Obama said on Thursday that a proposed referendum in Crimea to join Russia would violate international law and said US sanctions were aimed at punishing Moscow for its intervention in Ukraine.

"The proposed referendum on the future of Crimea would violate the Ukrainian constitution and violate international law," Obama told reporters at the White House.

"Any discussion about the future of Ukraine must include the legitimate government of Ukraine," he said.
