US Democrats have said that President Donald Trump's firing of FBI director James Comey may be an effort to undermine the investigation of possible collusion between his team and Russia, demanding an independent investigation.
The Republican president said he fired Mr Comey over his handling of an election-year email scandal involving then-Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton.
The move stunned Washington and raised suspicions among Democrats and others that the White House was trying to blunt the FBI probe involving Russia.
Some Democrats compared Mr Trump's move to the "Saturday Night Massacre" of 1973, in which then president Richard Nixon fired an independent special prosecutor investigating the Watergate scandal...........https://www.rte.ie/news/us/2017/0510/873927-donald-trump-james-comey/
