Assad cannot play any role in Syria’s future - (Hollande)

Syrian President Bashar al-Assad cannot play any role in Syria’s future, French President Francois Hollande said after talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin on Thursday.

"Assad can play no role in the country’s future," Hollande said adding it was necessary for Russia to play one of the key roles in the Syrian settlement.

"I told President Putin that France was ready to work hand to hand with Russia to achieve the common goal," the French president said.

  1. French FM sees Syrian regime participating in anti-IS fight...

French Foreign Minister Laurent Fabius said Friday that he could envisage Syrian regime troops taking part in the fight to crush the Islamic State group.

In order to fight IS, "there must be two measures: bombings... and ground troops who cannot be ours, but who should be of the (opposition) Free Syrian Army, Sunni Arab forces, and why not regime forces too," Fabius told French radio RTL.

France has stepped up its air strikes on IS targets in Syria and Iraq, where the group controls large areas of territory, and wants to create a more coordinated, concerted international effort to destroy the hardline Islamists.

On a visit to Moscow Thursday, Hollande and Russian leader Vladimir Putin agreed to coordinate strikes against the jihadists.

"The strikes against Daesh (IS) will be intensified and be the object of coordination," Hollande said at a press conference after their meeting at the Kremlin.......http://www.i24news.tv/en/news/international/europe/93727-151127-french-fm-sees-syrian-regime-participating-in-anti-is-fight
