South Korean Foreign Minister Yun Byung-se will hold talks with U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry and Japanese Foreign Minister Fumio Kishida in New York on Sept. 29 when he stays there to attend the UN General Assembly, Seoul's foreign ministry spokesman Noh Kwang-il told a press briefing.
During the trilateral meeting, Yun will explain the South Korean government's efforts to improve relations with the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) and intensively discuss ways of trilateral coordination for peace and stability on the Korean Peninsula with his U.S. and Japanese counterparts, the spokesman said.
Local newspaper Joongang Ilbo cited an unidentified foreign ministry official as saying Monday that South Korea is pushing to hold a bilateral meeting in New York between Yun and Kishida.
Yun and Kishida were expected to discuss the enactment in Japan of the controversial security legislation and the so-called " comfort woman" issue, according to the newspaper.
South Korea has reiterated its position that Japan must win consent or request from South Korea before its right to collective self-defense is exercised on the Korean Peninsula as the enacted security bills allow Japan's troops to fight overseas for the first time since the end of World War II.
South Korea and Japan hold a director general-level diplomatic meeting in Tokyo last week to discuss the Imperial Japan's forced recruitment of Korean women into sex slavery for Japanese military brothels during its colonization of the Korean Peninsula from 1910 to 1945, but no invisible agreement was reached.
Spokesman Noh said that no details have been fixed yet on the bilateral meeting between Yun and Kishida, but he noted that the two sides have already agreed to regularly hold such meeting between foreign ministers.
