Egypt Court Orders Retrial for Mubarak

An Egyptian appeals court ruled that former President Hosni Mubarak must face a retrial on charges related to the killing of protesters during the 2011 uprising that forced him from power.
The court Thursday accepted an appeal by prosecutors against an earlier ruling that dismissed the murder charges against the former authoritarian leader. The judge said the second and final trial will begin November 5.

The 87-year-old Mubarak, who ruled Egypt for 29 years, has been in prison since his arrest in 2011. He has since been the subject of multiple controversial legal cases.

He was convicted in 2012 to life in prison over the deaths of 800 protesters. That ruling was later overturned on technicalities. A retrial was ordered, but the charges were dropped in November.

Earlier this month, Mubarak and his two sons were sentenced to three years in prison on corruption charges related to the embezzlement of millions of dollars.
