The Commission gave its verdict in a statement after intense talks, which resulted in British Prime Minister Theresa May taking an early-morning flight to Brussels to announce the deal alongside Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker.
The Commission’s recommendation that sufficient progress has been made will now go to the European Union summit of leaders taking place next week, Reuters reported.
May said she expected a formal agreement to be approved at the summit, which begins on December 14.
“I also look forward to next week’s European Council meeting, where I hope and expect we will be able to get the endorsement of the 27 (member countries) to what is a hard-won agreement in all our interests,” May said.
The commission said it was ready to begin work immediately on phase two talks, which cover a transitional exit period, trade and long-term relations with the bloc.
Moving to talks about trade and a Brexit transition is crucial for the future of May’s premiership, and to keep trade flowing between the world’s biggest trading bloc and its sixth- largest national economy after Britain leaves on March 30, 2019.

ReplyDeleteLes prochaines étapes de la négociation entre Européens et Britanniques sur le Brexit - la sortie du Royaume-Uni de l'Union européenne (UE) - seront "très difficiles", a estimé ce vendredi le négociateur en chef de l'Union européenne, Michel Barnier.
"Tout le monde n'a pas encore compris que certains points ne seront pas négociables", a déclaré le Français, faisant notamment référence à l'intégrité du marché unique européen et à ses quatre libertés (libre circulation des biens, des capitaux, des personnes et des services).
"Les Britanniques, qui ont élaboré ces règles avec nous, les connaissent très bien", a-t-il assuré.
Interrogé sur la future relation commerciale que pourraient entretenir Européens et Britanniques, Michel Barnier a estimé qu'un accord de libre-échange sur le modèle de celui conclu entre l'UE et le Canada (CETA) serait la seule solution possible si les "lignes rouges" posées par la Première ministre britannique, Theresa May, ne changent pas.

Bereits gegen sechs Uhr früh landete heute die britische Premierministerin in Brüssel, um die ungeduldig erwartete Botschaft zu überbringen: Der Weg in die nächste Phase der Brexit-Verhandlungen kann beschritten werden. Der Durchbruch ist geschafft, verkündete denn auch die EU-Kommission: "Ausreichender Fortschritt" bei der ersten Phase der Scheidungsgespräche sei erzielt. Damit kann es beim Gipfel der EU-Staats- und Regierungschefs Mitte nächster Woche grünes Licht für den Start bei den Verhandlungen über die künftigen Beziehungen zwischen der EU und dem Vereingten Königreich geben.
