Seven-story residential building collapses in Nairobi, Kenya

A seven-story residential building collapsed in Nairobi, the Kenya Red Cross said, and some residents are believed trapped in the rubble.

About 121 residents were evacuated and accounted for, police said, after cracks were seen in the building's interior walls. The structure stood in the low-income Kware neighborhood of Nairobi's Embakasi area.

"There are some people who sneaked back [in] to collect some of their belongings before the building caved in. We haven't been able to scrutinize but we believe some people could be trapped," said witness Kamau Mwangi.

No fatalities were reported, although a woman with three children refused to leave their residence. They have not been found.

The building, which was not licensed by county inspectors, sunk into its foundation on Monday evening. Fire fighters led the evacuation of the residents.

The number of missing occupants has not been confirmed, the Kenya Red Cross said.

Nairobi Gov. Evans Kidero, who visited the scene, said the city identified 30,000 residential buildings which need to be demolished.
