De Mistura: Astana talks to produce positive results

UN Secretary-General's Special Envoy for Syria Staffan de Mistura said on Thursday that the relentless efforts of Iran, Russia and Turkey during Astana talks are to bear fruits to prevent increase of conflicts in Syria.

'Today in Astana I think we have been able to witness an important promising positive step in the right direction in the process of de-escalation of the conflict,' de Mistura told reporters, according to UN sources.

In the meeting it was agreed to prevent intensification of the conflicts and reach an agreement on a ceasefire in four new districts, he said.

  • The exact date of the agreement will be made public after consultation with the UN secretary-general, de Mistura said.

UN regards the efforts made by the Islamic Republic of Iran, Russia and Turkey in the presence of US and Jordan high ranking representatives as a great and outstanding achievement, he said.

At this sensitive juncture, adopting immediate and effective strategies to boost relief aids to those living under a very critical situation should be on the agenda, he added.

The two-day intra-Syrian talks with delegations from Iran, Russia, and Turkey present in the discussions as guarantors of the talks were held on Wednesday and Thursday in Astana, Kazakhstan.
