Pour sa première visite comme chef de la diplomatie, John Kerry tenait à encourager les négociations de paix relancées en mai, sous l'égide de l'ONU, entre les dirigeants chypriote-grec et chypriote-turc.
Il s'est entretenu tour à tour avec le président de la République de Chypre, Nicos Anastasiades, puis avec Mustafa Akinci. Il a dîné ensuite en compagnie des deux hommes à la résidence de l'émissaire de l'ONU, le Norvégien Espen Barth Eide, qui parraine le processus de paix.
"Je suis plus convaincu que jamais qu'une solution à la division de Chypre est à portée de main", a lancé M. Kerry devant la presse, après avoir brièvement participé à quelques paniers de basket-ball d'une équipe composée de jeunes originaires des deux parties de l'île.
"Ces derniers mois, il est devenu clair que la donne a commencé à changer et que des progrès tangibles ont été enregistrés", a-t-il dit, soulignant que son pays était "focalisé au plus haut niveau" sur la question chypriote.
Washington parle régulièrement d'un "conflit gelé" à propos de Chypre. "Les Etats-Unis sont et resteront impliqués vis-à-vis de Chypre et de son peuple (...) Nous pensons que l'heure de Chypre" a sonné, a-t-il encore martelé...

ReplyDeleteKerry, who paid an official visit to the island, made a statement to the press after concluding his contacts, saying that the US is committed and will remain committed to Cyprus and its people and will continue to support its leaders.
“I have closely followed the challenges on this island for literally decades. It has been a priority for me and for President Obama, for President Obama before, but for me since I became Secretary of State. The US is focused on this and has been focused on this at the highest levels. From Assistant Secretary Victoria Nuland`s extensive engagement, her trips here, to Vice President Biden`s visit last year, to my many meetings with the leaders of both communities in New York in September and elsewhere and to a number of continued phone calls encouraging progress in the process of trying to bring about peace,” he said.
Kerry noted that in recent months its has become clear that “the ground really is shifting and tangible progress has been made” and said that he is more convinced than ever that a resolution to the long standing division of Cyprus is within reach and with it the many benefits of unity for all the people of the island.
