Syrian forces mount attack on rebel-held town

The Syrian troops have started a wide-scale offensive on a key rebel-held Syrian city northeast of the capital Damascus, the state-news agency SANA reported Saturday.

The troops started the offensive on the city of Adra, fully besieging the town and killing many "terrorists," said SANA, spelling no further details.

Ukrainian govt forces trying to break through encirclement of Mariupol

DONETSK, September 04. /ITAR-TASS/. A part of armed units loyal to the Kiev government are trying to break through the East-Ukrainian militias’ encirclement of the port of city of Mariupol on the Sea of Azov, Novorossia news agency said Thursday.
At the time of reporting, a combat action was in progress near the township of Bezymennoye.
Fighting between Ukrainian Army units and the militia began Thursday afternoon on the approaches to the eastern outskirts of Mariupol.

Buses enter Old Homs to evacuate Syrian rebels

The evacuation of Syrian rebels from their last stronghold in the central city of Homs appeared to be getting underway on Wednesday as several buses entered the besieged Old City district to ferry them out, activists said.
The withdrawal of more than 1,000 fighters from Homs is part of a complex deal with President Bashar al-Assad's forces which also involves easing a rebel siege on two northern Shiite Muslim towns loyal to Assad.
It will also mark the end of any rebel presence in the heart of a city once called the "capital of the revolution" against Assad, handing the president a major symbolic victory less than a month before he is likely to be elected for a third term.
