Cyprus election challenger Malas concedes defeat to president Anastasiades

Cyprus President Nicos Anastasiades held an unassailable lead in a run-off election, securing 55.9 percent of vote with 95 percent of votes counted, and challenger Stavros Malas called to congratulate him on victory, Cyprus state television said Sunday.

The UN Secretary-General said on Monday that Cyprus is at a critical juncture to reunite the island and encouraged both its Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot leadership to work hard in order to reach an agreement.

Cost of Cyprus solution may reach 30 bln euros

The leaders of the Greek and Turkish Cypriot communities of Cyprus, currently engaged in negotiations aimed at reunifying the eastern Mediterranean island, have said the cost of a solution has been estimated at between 25 billion euros and 30 billion euros, Turkish Cypriot media reported on Monday.

Cyprus president ill: Anastasiades had been expected to condemn the entry of a Turkish survey ship into Cyprus's EEZ

Cyprus President Nicos Anastasiades was briefly hospitalized with high blood pressure Thursday in Brussels and asked Greece's premier to stand in for him at an EU summit, the government said.

"After prolonged nosebleeds the president of the republic was admitted early in the morning to a hospital in Brussels where it was found that the incident is due to high blood pressure," an official statement said.

The 68-year-old Greek Cypriot leader was discharged several hours later after receiving treatment and told to stay at his Brussels hotel to be closely monitored, government spokesman Nicos Christodoulides said.

UN, 26 September 2014 – Cyprus and its citizens deserve much more than a divided country, President [of Cyprus] Nicos Anastasiades today said, urging the adopting of his confidence building measures and Turkish cooperation on the issue of missing persons.

“What is also needed is the demonstration of genuine good will by our compatriots to negotiate in good faith,” Mr. Anastasiades told the United Nations 69th General Assembly on the third day of its General Debate, at UN Headquarters in New York.

Moscow stands for comprehensive, fair solution to Cypriot problems

Moscow stands for a comprehensive and fair solution to the Cypriot problem in the interests of Cyprus’ both communities, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said on Wednesday at a meeting with President of Cyprus Nikos Anastasiadis.

The meeting took place on the sidelines of the 69th General Assembly of the United Nations Organization in New York, the Russian Foreign Ministry said. Lavrov and Anastasiadis “discussed the current state of and prospects for Russia-Cyprus cooperation, including in the legal sphere,” the ministry said. “The sides exchanged view on a number of pressing international problems, including the current situation in relations between Russia and the European Union over the Ukrainian crisis.”

Greek government, Cypriot President voice concern over progress of Cyprus peace talks during Athens meeting

Greece's government and visiting Cypriot President Nikos Anastasiades voiced concern over the pace of progress in peace talks with the so-called Turkish Cypriot side regarding the resolution of the Cyprus issue during a meeting in Athens on Monday.

Anastasiades, who is on a two-day visit to Greece, discussed the ongoing talks for the reunification of the divided island with Greek Prime Minister Antonis Samaras and other Greek government officials on Monday, while on Tuesday he is due to hold talks with leaders of opposition parties.
