Five teenagers arrested in Australia were planning an terrorist attack next week at an event to mark the centenary of the landings at Gallipoli during World War 1, Prime Minister Tony Abbot has said.

Melbourne airport evacuated due to security alert

A terminal at an airport in this Australian city was today evacuated following a security alert, leading to disruption of several fights.

A 'security alert' at Tullamarine Airport forced the evacuation of Tigerair's terminal 4 and disrupted some flights.

The official launch of the Melbourne Lemnos Gallipoli Memorial will take place at the Victorian Parliament on 30 October.

The official launch of the Melbourne Lemnos Gallipoli Memorial will take place at the Victorian Parliament on 30 October - 95 years to the day after the armistice that ended hostilities in the Middle Eastern theatre of WWI was signed in Mudros Bay, Lemnos.

The project seeks support to establish a monumental tribute to Lemnos' story in WWI and is being co-ordinated by the Lemnos Gallipoli Commemorative Committee.

Αυστραλία: Η ομογένεια τίμησε μαζικά την επέτειο του «ΟΧΙ». -Παράλληλα με το «Όχι» γιορτάστηκε και η αρμονική συμβίωση όλων των εθνοτήτων

Μαζικά αλλά και με λαμπρότητα ο Ελληνισμός της Μελβούρνης τίμησε την ιστορική επέτειο της 28ης Οκτωβρίου. Η επέτειος του «Όχι» τιμήθηκε με χωριστές αλλά μαζικές εκδηλώσεις στη Μελβούρνη. Οι μαζικότερες έγιναν στο Όκλι, και στο Νόρθκοτ.

Στο Όκλι η εκδήλωση οργανώθηκε από την εκεί Ελληνική Κοινότητα και το ημερήσιο κολέγιο της Oakleigh Grammar με τη συνεργασία του τοπικού δήμου Μόνας και την χρηματοδότηση της πολιτειακής κυβέρνησης.

Συμμετείχαν μάλιστα και άλλες εθνικότητες αφού, παράλληλα με το «Όχι» γιορτάστηκε και η αρμονική συμβίωση όλων των εθνοτήτων μαζί με ανεκτικότητα και χωρίς διακρίσεις.

Babiniotis to address parents on benefits of Greek

Professor of Linguistics Mr George Babiniotis, will be speaking to parents on the importance of studying the Greek language and on effective ways of learning Greek.
For the first time in Melbourne, parents are given this opportunity to meet and hear from one of the most important academics who will be visiting Australian from the University of Athens.
Professor Babiniotis will speak to the parents on the topic of: The pedagogical, scientific and social benefits of learning the Greek Language and effective ways of learning the language.

The Pontian Community of Melbourne encourages the study of the Greek language

In order to encourage the study of Modern Greek at secondary and tertiary levels, the Pontian Community of Melbourne and Victoria established an award of $1000 annually, to be given to a student who, having achieved high marks in Modern Greek at VCE level, will proceed to enrol in the following year in the Greek Studies Program at tertiary level.

Australia: Pontian genocide commemorated ...

The Pontian Genocide was commemorated at an event held by the Coordinating Committee of Pontian Assocciations in Melbourne (SEPSM).
Greek Australian MP Jenny Mikakos once again stated her commitment to continue her struggle for the international recognition of the Pontian Genocide. In her speech at the event, she underlined that the only thing Greeks ask is that Turkey recognizes the genocide and publicly apologises, comparing the apology to the time that former Prime Minister of Australia Kevin Rudd said "sorry" to the indigenous Australians for the suffering brought to them when they were invaded.

Diaspora group aims to change Greece’s ethos ...

The Hellenic Democratic Initiative (HID) held a talk last week on the Greek crisis and the new bailout agreement at the State Library of Victoria. The talk covered a variety of topics including the terms of the bailout agreement, corruption in Greece, migration of Greek youth and the role of the Hellenic diaspora in helping to achieve change in Greece.

Melbourne's Greek Community chips in (GOCMV have given $5000 to aid the survival of the Greek Language Program at Monash University) ....

The Greek Orthodox Community of Melbourne and Victoria (GOCMV) have put their money where their mouth is with a $5,000 donation to the Greek Language Program at Monash University.
GOCMV's Community Education Officer, Theo Markou, confirmed to Neos Kosmos that the money was transferred last Wednesday.
