Kremlin recalls maritime law when speaking about Estonia's plans for Gulf of Finland

Russia is proceeding from the fact that freedom of navigation is guaranteed by international maritime law, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said on Tuesday. He was speaking about Estonia's plans to introduce a so-called contiguous zone in the Gulf of Finland.

"There is international maritime law, we must proceed from this," he said. Peskov stressed that "freedom of navigation is ensured by this law."

"We proceed from the assumption that this will be the case," Peskov said.

Earlier it was reported that Tallinn is working on plans to introduce a contiguous zone at a distance of more than 40 km from the baseline of Estonian territorial waters. This may cause difficulties for Russian ships in the Gulf of Finland.
