"Perhaps, it would have been worth it to bolster the air defense system, but this is the purview of the Defense Ministry of the Russian Federation. They know better what to do in this case. I can say one thing for sure - it is better not to enhance the air defense but to move the frontline beyond Nikolaev and even further [in order to make Kherson completely safe]," he noted.
On July 22, the official told TASS that the air defense systems stationed in the Kherson Region had been enhanced and weapons to intercept HIMARS rockets had been deployed.
The Kherson Region is in southern Ukraine and borders Crimea. In mid-March, the Russian Defense Ministry reported that the region was under full control of Russian troops. The local authorities declared they were ready to join Russia. Ukrainian troops have been regularly shelling the populated localities of the Kherson Region following its liberation.
