North Korea tests new long-range cruise missile - BBC News

North Korea has tested a new long-range cruise missile capable of hitting much of Japan, state media said on Monday.

Tests staged over the weekend saw missiles travelling as far as 1,500km (930 miles) away, according to KCNA.

However, it does not violate UN Security Council resolutions - they have lead to tough sanctions on North Korea in the past.

But it suggests the country is still capable of developing weapons despite food shortages and an economic crisis.

The test of the cruise missile provides "strategic significance of possessing another effective deterrence means for more reliably guaranteeing the security of our state and strongly containing the military manoeuvres of the hostile forces," KCNA said.

  1. The Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) successfully test-fired new type of long-range cruise missiles on Saturday and Sunday, the Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) reported on Monday.

The launched long-range cruise missiles traveled for 7,580 seconds along oval and pattern-8 flight orbits in the air above the territorial land and waters of the DPRK and hit targets 1,500 km away, the report said.

The development of this weapon system "holds strategic significance of possessing another effective deterrence means for more reliably guaranteeing the security of our state and strongly containing the military maneuvers of the hostile forces against the DPRK," the report noted.

The development of the long-range cruise missile "has been pushed forward according to the scientific and reliable weapon system development process for the past two years" and detailed tests of missile parts, scores of engine ground thrust tests, various flight tests, control and guidance tests, warhead power tests, etc. were conducted with success, according to the report.

"In all, the efficiency and practicality of the weapon system operation was confirmed to be excellent," the KCNA said.

  3. North Korea's tests of a new long-range cruise missile on September 11 and 12 do not violate UN Security Council resolutions, an informed military source in Seoul told TASS on Monday.

"The Security Council did not impose any restrictions on the development or testing of cruise missiles by North Korea, which pose a lesser threat than ballistic missiles capable of carrying a nuclear charge, including across the ocean," the source noted.

Considering this, "it is unlikely that any reciprocal steps will follow" from the international community, the source added.
