Tokyo Olympics opening ceremony held in near-empty stadium amid pandemic

 --

The Tokyo Olympics opening ceremony officially kicked off on Friday, held without ordinary spectators due to the pandemic.

Only around 10-thousand people reportedly attended the ceremony,... including VIPs, foreign guests, press, and the athletes.

Among those introduced at the ceremony were the South Korean team, with volleyball star Kim Yeon-koung and swimmer Hwang Sun-woo appearing as flagbearers.

Japan's global tennis star Naomi Osaka lit the Olympic cauldron. Across Tokyo, anti-Olympic protests took place... as COVID-19 cases are surging in Japan. The Games will run until August 8th.
