Libya crisis: Vote to unite splintered nation - BBC News

A Libyan interim unity government has been chosen to replace the war-torn country's rival administrations and oversee elections in December.

Delegates at a UN-led forum voted for a three-member presidential council and a prime minister at the end of five days of talks in Geneva.

It is a key step in a peace process that builds on last year's ceasefire.

  1. Electing the head of Libya’s transitional government on Friday became a ‘breakthrough’ towards crisis settlement in the country, UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres told reporters.

"I do believe it a breakthrough, and it is following the successful result of the negotiations of the 5+5 - the Joint Military Committee - that led to a ceasefire," the UN chief said.

"So now we have a ceasefire. We have a political agreement about elections; we have a new transitional authority being put in place - or going to be put in place," he added. "It is essential that all foreign fighters and mercenaries move first to Tripoli and Benghazi and then leave the country, according to the new schedule that was defined."

On Friday, the Libyan Political Dialogue Forum members cast their votes to elect Libya’s prime minister and three members of the Presidency Council. Their key goal will be to hold presidential and parliamentary elections on December 34, 2021. Mohammad Younes Menfi was elected president of the Presidency Council, Mossa Al-Koni and Abdullah Hussein Al-Lafi became its members, while Abdul Hamid Dbeibah will lead the government as prime minister. Their main task will be to hold nationwide elections in the country on December 24, 2021.
