The USGS issued a preliminary alert recording the quake as a 7.0 magnitude temblor, but Turkey's Disaster and Emergency Management Presidency (AFAD) said it was a 6.6 quake which struck along the Aegean coast.
The temblor struck shortly after 1:51pm local time near the Greek island of Samos, with the Mayor of eastern Samos claiming multiple buildings had collapsed.
Eyewitness footage from around the Aegean shows crowds evacuating onto the streets as large dust clouds emanated from collapsed buildings in the distance.

A powerful earthquake has struck off Turkey's Aegean coast, north of the Greek island of Samos.
ReplyDeleteThe tremor of 7.0 magnitude was centred off Turkey's Izmir province, the US Geological Survey (USGS) said, and was felt as far away as Athens and Istanbul.
Turkish officials said there were no reports of casualties so far but six buildings had collapsed in Izmir city.
Turkey and Greece both sit on fault lines and earthquakes are common.

Professor Konstantinos Synolakis, who developed the global tsunami simulation model, speaking to protothema.gr, said that a level tsunami was a possibility.

ReplyDeleteWork continued through the night to search for survivors in buildings that were destroyed as a result of the earthquake.
Around 100 survivors have been pulled out alive from the rubble so far, Turkey's Environment and Urbanisation Minister Murat Kurum told reporters.
However many people are still trapped and aftershocks have hampered rescue workers.
The death toll from the quake, which also struck the Greek island of Samos, has risen to 30, with over 800 injured.
