Lavrov: We will stand up to attempts to divide Syria

attempts to divide Syria
We will resist any attempts to divide Syria and undermine a peaceful solution to the crisis in it, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said, while condemning the illegal tripartite aggression on Syria.

In a joint press conference following the meeting of foreign ministers of the Astana process guarantor states, Russia, Iran and Turkey in Moscow on Saturday,  Lavrov stressed that there is no alternative to the diplomatic process to overcome the crisis in Syria on the basis of resolution 2254 .

The Russian Diplomat said : “ We reject attempts of some foreign oppositions to dictate preconditions for the Syrian-Syrian dialogue.

For his part, Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammed Javad Zarif said: There is no solution to the crisis in Syria except through the intra-Syrian dialogue and away from any external pressures.

He added that Washington is pursuing subversive policy in Syria that violates international agreements and UN resolutions.

Earlier during the meeting of guarantor states’ foreign ministers, Lavrov has stressed his country’s adherence to Syria’s unity and sovereignty.

Lavrov said that Russia will continue to back the Syrian people in the fight against terrorism.

The Iranian Foreign Minister, in turn, emphasized that there is no military solution to the crisis in Syria, stressing that the fight against terrorism is an international responsibility.

“ US actions in Syria will aggravate the situation and threaten the unity and independence of the country,” Zarif said.

He added that there is a need for a comprehensive and independent investigation into the alleged chemical use in Douma city.

  1. The three ministers reiterated their commitment to a peaceful resolution of the seven-year war in Syria, and dismissed criticism from some other nations that the Astana negotiations, which the three nations kick-started, were somehow harmful for the UN-sponsored negotiations in Geneva.

Lavrov stated that the “Astana format is standing strong,” and criticized some Syrian opposition forces for trying to set conditions on their participation in the Geneva talks, including the removal of Syrian President Bashar Assad from power.
